eSatap (Power over eSATA) external hard drive/ enclosure

Hi,

My laptop only has USB2… but it does have an eSATAp port, which will apparently give me awesome data transfer rates compared to USB2.

So I found this, which looks like something that will do the trick (maybe if I put a 7200rpm HHD in it):

I'm just after some communal thoughts and past experiences with this technology, and if anyone has come across any other Australian suppliers of anything similar

… or any bargains :p

Cheers!

  • esata will give better speeds than usb2

you don't really need an enclosure. obviously an enclosure will give you more protection against physical damage to the drive. a fanned enclosure to keep the drive cool would be nice.

for 2.5" i think you could get away using just a cheap cable such as in http://www.buyincoins.com/new_en/details/esata-usb-to-sata-c…

for 3.5" you probably need to power the drive externally - again there are cheap cables + power pack for that.

  • ah right, so i can plug the SATA end of the cable straight into the back of a hard drive? cool thanks!

  • You can get enclosures for both 2.5" and 3.5" such as these Vantec ones which feature esata connectivity but not power-over-sata at a much more reasonable cost. For 2.5" cases, you then connect the power to a spare USB port. 3.5" cases comes with their own power supply.

  • eSatap is great, but unfortunately hasn't taken off much. It will offer better results than even USB3, but is far less available.
