What to Look for in a Bed Frame

Hi
Looking at buying single beds for the kids. What should I be looking for? These are gonna be their beds for quite abit of time so want to get it right.
Criteria: wood (missus doesn’t like metal), and I guess space for storage underneath?

Any difference between a target, ikea, fantastic, or expensive brand?

Thanks

Make sure the gaps in the slats are as small as possible. This will help the mattresses last longer and provide more support

  • If the kids are fairly young, you can get extendable beds nowadays as they grow taller. Might be worth considering.

    Example: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/images/products/busunge-extendabl…

  • Something not squeaky.

    • Unless you have a-hole neighbours… then the squeakier, the better!

If they have to be wood, I’d recommend going hardwood of some variety.

Consider MDF a no go if you want it to last, and solid pine as a second resort (as some cheap stuff is very soft).

We bought some bunks made out of painted rubber wood (slightly stronger than pine) and they’re holding up really well.

    • Rubberwood is apparently very prone to twisting - have you experienced this at all?

Not in the last 2 years.

Our is made out of a laminated product (smaller bits glued together) and it's painted. Between the two, there shouldn't be much room for moisture to enter or flex.

hwhy single and not double or queen

      Space

  • If you don't need the storage and dust repository, why not ensembles with separate bedheads? I also recommend king singles - if you have space.

IKEA with drawers underneath works well. Think it's the MALM range which we have, has held up fine for many years so far.

  • Make sure it looks like a race car.

How long is "quite abit of time"? If it's through their teen years maybe you should consider king singles instead?
