Breeders Choice Cat Litter Too Expensive Now

Was using the clumping clay litters that were relatively cheap at first. But didn't like all the dust and messy handling side of it.

Then moved to Breeders Choice Cat Litter which was great and clean. Used to be able to get the 30L bags under $20 on special but nowadays you'll be lucky to get it for $26 (if you buy multiple) which is pretty expensive. I have to see how long it lasts but I think 3-4wks max.

What's everyone using?

Worlds best cat litter off of Amazon. Buy up when it drops to around $22 for 6.35kg using S&S which happens about once every two months going off 3xcamel. Seems expensive but it clumps really well so you don't use much of it. A bag last me about 6 weeks with one cat. Made from corn so it can go in the green bin.

I've used Breeders Choice and TidyCat and Worlds Best is by far better in almost every way. Does get a little dusty after the first week or so after a change but about the same as TidyCat

Make sure to double check your council accepts pet waste. I use cat litter that could go in the green bin, but they don't accept the waste itself.

Cat waste can spread toxoplasmosis which is pretty dangerous for pregnant women. So unless the green waste is properly treated they'll be sending it all to landfill if they find cat waste.

      • Damn, you're right. Guess I'll just start throwing it in the garden, it's also flushable.

    • I find world best cat litter have tracking issues on the cat paws. I tried Kungfu Cat Litter from amazon, the 1.5mm pallets size is great, it reduces the dusty issues which bigger pallets have. For Example, Rufus & coco ,probably need a full replace every 5-6 weeks, the amount of dust at end of 5th week, makes my air purifier orange/red.

      • I have a little mat in front of my litter box which picks up most of it so it's not so much of an issue for me. How's the clumping on the kung fu litter? How long are you getting out of it?

        • I also used a XL litter mat near the litter box. But could still see the world best cat litters tracking around rest of the place since my cat like to dash out after using the litter box.

The Kungfu Cat litter clumping is pretty good since the pallet is small and doesn't have much waste compare to bigger pallets, but still minor amount of tracking which is captured by the litter mat mostly. And it doesn't have a great amount of dust at end of 5-6 weeks, so getting around 6-7 weeks for a bag of 6kg with regular top up, not much residual dust so not really needing to replace the whole litter box as often. I was surprised to see the low amount of dust at end of 4th week when i initially tried kungfu cat litter.

    • Do you use the Green or Red version of World's Best Cat Litter?

I am going to buy a second litter tray at Kmart for $4 and maybe some liners to make changing easier. I dont want to pay a lot for litterwhen my breeders choice runs out. You can scoop out the poop to make it last a bit longer. I have unwanted cats and kittens that turned up on my doorstep. Gave then mother and babycat from Royal Canin, now they wont touch anything else. Not even grateful. just using me for food and shelter.

I swear Royal Canin put something in the food that makes cat refuse all else- I'm transferring mine back to her normal food after being on an RC prescription and she won't have a bar if it, despite LOVING the original stuff previously.

She better start wanting it soon, I bought a bulk load and its too late to return!

Ive had to take their leftovers to other homeless cats, they will eat it

Wait, CATS are doing this? Cats, the animals, treating humans with disdain and just doing what they want?

      • +1

most cats show a bit of affection and appreciation, these ones dont

        • +2

they know deep down you're a kind person, that's why they came to your doorstop in the first place

          • +1

@Crow K: I am concerned because I have to rehome the kittens before they lose their cuteness to give them the best chance, but I cant pick them up

@screensaver: God finds a way, I'm sure they'll turn out just fine

I use Catmate pine pellets and sifting trays, great stuff- scoop the poop and give it a good shake for the wee (it turns pellets into sawdust that goes through the sifter). If you have a puppy pad in the bottom, you switch the pad out as needed (1-2 times a week does me and my 3 cats) and top up the main litter as you need. Vastly reduced smell. The RSPCA does a 15kg bag for $20 and I buy in bulk whenever I get the chance to go past.

You could also try Petcircle or Budget pet products for paper litter (knockoff brand especially), they tend to be cheaper than most places. Max's is also fairly good, or the Kmart crystals if you would rather go that way.

    • I'll second this. We tried all the litter systems and this is the best once you get the hang of it

  • Just wait for Amazon to get it back in stock, it's usually a decent price there. The Petstock deal in June was pretty great through, I'm still working through the 3 bags of it I bought then, should have gotten more.

I use wood pellets. Find a local supplier. Buy in bulk.
Don't tell them you're using it as kitty litter or they will charge you the pet tax claiming it's a different product when it's not.

I went from clay to Breeders choice to wood pellets. Prices have almost doubled for wood pellets too, used to be around $15 for 15kg.

  • I took my brother's long term cat ownership advice and got an automatic litter box and have been using poopoo (petso) brand tofu litter.

The automatic box only dumps the used litter so you get maximum use out of each bag, plus the tofu really works wonders in removing smells from the air.

    • Which automatic litter box did you get?

      • +1

It's the petkit pura max I think, I got it second hand from my brother. Definitely worth it, you only change the bag every week and a bit (for reference, our kitten is 4kg now).

I think they can be had for around $700 on sale, I would say they are worth the investment after having one.

  • Ouch, back in the day I used to pay $15 a bag after discount. That and Ozpet was slightly cheaper. Maybe look into horse pellets and see if you can find a stock feed near you

  • I saw this one at coles, its a big huge bag and can get discounts such as spend 50 get 2000 points
    https://www.coles.com.au/product/coles-cat-litter-recycled-p…

  • I use Kmart's Tofu litter now. Works a treat because it clumps and is 100% flushable.
I find Kmart's still one of the most affordable tofu litter out there. All the other brands are pretty pricey.
Hoping to invest in an automatic litter box next!

  • Breeders are $72 for 90L delivered from Catch if you have OnePass.

Don’t kill me over this, but has anyone thought of using rice? The price is quite comparable these days, just not too absorbent maybe?
