Fantastic cheap cams with minimal setup. I have a few of them set up around the house.

I run mine without the camplus subscriptions….as long as you have microSD cards in them and they don't get stolen, then it's really all you need.

    • Wouldn’t a pan and tilt model be better? Can it be set to record at only moving objects and at low resolution ie. not HD? Can it reset the SD card cache automatically or you need to reformat the SD card memory frequently? Can it also record in the background without opening the apps all the time? Thanks.

        Sorry, on mobile.

        1. Yes, I have had most models. I was speaking generally.

        2. Don't think you can set record quality.

        3. It overwrites the SD card constantly. No need to reformat when full.

        4. Subscription gives cloud recording, microSD card gives local recording. No need to have app open.

        • Should be able to have rtsp feed if supported model or third party software to record on other device, such as computer NAS. Some NAS come with surveillance software. Look up rtsp (it created a video stream file to your camera. Can watch it in browser, vlc player and more.

I personally can't stand the recording limitations without a subscription, even with the sdcard it puts like 5-10 min blocks in between motion events & gives zero smart detection features. I am not a fan of the timeline of motion events.. Wouldn't buy again personally.

These are are a subscription trap. do not buy unless you intend to pay for monthly subscription OR you're only interested in recording everything, but not interested in alerts.
All smart alerts are subscription only, and the dumb alerts are dumb as hell, to the point I don't see how anyone could keep notification/alerts turned on without paying for subscription/smart alerts

    • Thanks for sharing. So are you saying even for those that are okay to have storage directly in the camera (microSD card), any motion detection notifications still aren't useful or have to be paid for via subscription? Thanks.

      • +4

The wyze cam i bought had a 5-10min "cool-off" period before it will capture the next event. So if something happen during this window, you wont know about it. unless you pay the subscription fees to remove this restriction of course

    • You mean it can’t be set to record only moving objects? I just need it to review occasionally if I forgot where I left a thing last not for theft.

      • yes you can, you can do it for free, or you can pay for the cheap subscription.

    • Yeah, I have some V2s that I'm using with HomeKit Secure Video via RTSP, but lack of ONVIF support means you need to find less than ideal solutions for motion detection if you want to use it outside Wyze's ecosystem.

I've got some TP-Link Tapo C210 pan & tilt cameras, which do have ONVIF and they work way better with your own integrated solutions. Just no colour night vision.

Having gone Tapo C210 I much prefer that type of camera. Being able to swivel the camera is very helpful.

This camera looks like it's stuck with this one angle.

  • The subscription is worth it IMO + a SD card, the dollar amount is hardly worth thinking over.

    https://github.com/gtxaspec/wz_mini_hacks

Alternative firmware to give some features and not rely on subscription model

  • This or v3 pro(which is also discounted)?

  • This or this?

How are these any better than the ancient Xiaofang running Fang Hacks? Seems significantly overpriced. Would rather spend $50 on a Imou 4mp camera instead. 1080p is old school

    • Because Xiofang hack had limitation of the already installed firmware version ?

  • Why is the v3 pan versions never sold by Amazon directly been checking for months.

  • Anyone been using this with homeassistant?
Been running a number of pi-zeros with motioneyeos for some time and thinking if this can be a decent upgrade - only rtsp and mjpeg http is needed.

    • +1

Not personally but I know a few people using the mini_wz firmware and Frigate+Homeassistant with no issues. I bought two to add as internal cameras for my garages

The TP-Link alternatives being suggested here have some benefits, but the similarly priced ones aren't suitable for outdoor nor have colour night vision.

I run both Wyze and Tapo cams. I refer to the thumbnail images in push notifications from the Wyze app all the time and it's one of their most helpful features. The Tapo doesn't support this without a paid subscription.

95% of the time, all I do is look at the thumbnails in push notifications. Opening up the app, finding the camera, and reviewing playback is a task I rarely have time for. The non-sub'd TP-Link sucks for this. If they changed this, it'd be a gamechanger for those who just want it to work out of the box. Tapo has good (B&W) night vision though!

Both options have their perks. My $0.02

  • I'm seeing a lot of conflicting reviews in this comment section. Is anyone able to summarise what is and isn't possible without the subscription.

I am looking for an indoor camera to record motion and sound as a dog monitor. This ticked the cheap and 2 way audio box but I'm seeing some suggest you cannot use motion trigger without the subscription? How does this stack against a similarly priced Tp Link Tapo one?

    • +1

You can record to an SD card continuously or when there is an event, it can record it automatically.

The main issue is it will give you notifications when there is an alert, but you cannot playback the exact video clip unless you go into the camera manually. It'll give you a temporary screenshot in the notification, but if you want to playback the exact clip AUTOMATICALLY, you need to have a subscription. Otherwise all you need to do is to go to playback mode manually and search for the event - which works sometimes but they seem to have constant firmware and software issues.

For the price it's worth it, just be ready with a 70% product, vs a wired PVR system which is 100% reliable.

      • Great review. What would you recommend for an indoor cam which record motion object only with no subscription needed? It should be able to run in background without opening the app all the time.

        • These ones are perfectly fine. Read my other comment. Just use SD card for continuous recording.

      • +1

I've got 6 of those (v1 and v2) around and in the house and I can confirm this is NOT correct. If you don't have Cam+ subscription but do have an SD card installed, it's true the notification for motion/sound will be just a thumbnail (photo) of the event but once you "click" on the thumbnail there are 3 options at the bottom "live view", "playback" and "delete". Clicking on "playback" will start video playback from the SD card from the exact moment of the notification, no need to manually search the event.

  • I'm purchasing one just to take plant timelapses - anyone know doing the same? Know if there are better value alternatives?

    • A guy in Brisbane has a YouTube channel hoocho use the Wyse cams for it.

      • Yeah, that's where I got the idea :)
