That didn't last long. Looks like OOS at Amazon Au now. Ten minutes reviewing before clicking buy now and the remaining 4 units were gone!

    • same here, good price but hard to decide if it's worth the price to upgrade from AX82U to this one, now problem solved:)

    • +2

It's available again for $379. I just ordered one now. Hope you manage to get one.

It's back on offer as of 08/08/23….

  • Maybe check out the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 Dual-Band WiFi 6 Extendable Gaming Router, Dual 2.5G Ports, Triple-level Game Acceleration, Mobile Game Mode, Aura RGB, Subscription-free Network Security, AiMesh Compatible https://amzn.asia/d/bS3VRGg

Got mine for $400, highly recommended.
Check eBay - $474 wireless1 (includes $50 off with eBay plus).

    • With $100 gift card promotion in June.

      • Great deal, all comments said it was a better (ignoring the gaming in the name).

I just 28d protect claimed so happy enough with $400.

      • Just beware that last cashback from Asus took about 5 months to arrived from the date of purchase.

    • From searching up on it, it seemed the AX6000 beat out the AX86U, but not the AX86U Pro.

Any references before I cancel and pay an extra $100 for the 6000?

      • Dunno haven't looked at the pro.
Just an alternative if people missed out, and similar enough (form factor aside).

        • Ah, cool. Good stuff

      • Happy to buy it off you rt-ax86u

      • Did you happen to have any links to where I can read up about the regular AX86U, AX86U Pro and AX6000?

    • So the cashback offer has ended on the AX6000? Was it just for the GT-AX line that had those offers?

I'm trying to decide between the RT-AX86U Pro and maybe one of the AX6000s. I'm assuming the only difference is the gaming features of the GT version of AX6000s? Any other difference that you know of?

As for the differences between the AX86U and AX6000, I'm assuming Wifi is the major difference? If so, I guess I'd be happy to wait for a deal on the AX86 Pro. Would have been happy with this price of $379.

I'm currently still using an RT-AC68U and wanted to upgrade to one of those so I can use Wireguard VPN protocol.

  • Need to set myself an alarm for one of these!

    • It's available again for $379. I just ordered one now. Hope you manage to get one.

      • Thanks! Missed it (again!) That'll teach me to go on holiday!

It's back in stock again at $379.

  • Guys what is the main purpose of a router like this one ever a single router from a mesh system?
I see nothing wrong with this good deal but regarding Australian stock be ware that croocks are everywhere and so I had to return a TP-Link mesh system that I bought from a well known Australian business which came from the EU.
The issue was that the main box had a phone line capability which was not compatible with our NBN because in the EU they do not have the NBN!
Hours and hours on chat with the technical staff from both TP-Link and NBN provider, then still I had to struggle with the vendor for return and BS scripts until I complained through PayPal and got the money back including the TP-Link stuff!

    • +2

      That sounds faulty.
NBN telephone is just simple VOIP.
      It has no special requirements.

      • That sounds faulty

But a simple plug & play with a Grandstream 802H box fixed the issue, TP-Link mesh system reimbursed anyways, sold it on Marketplace and replaced with Netgear.
A little bit of gain for all my wasted time and stress.

        • But a simple plug & play with a Grandstream 802H box fixed the issue

Well, yes. Replacing something faulty with something that's not, will usually fix the issue :)

        • That looks like a pretty cool box/device. Where did you buy the Grandstream from if you don't mind me asking? What is the average price to pay for it?

          • @Ice009:

Where did you buy the Grandstream from

I found it online but I preferred to buy it from my NBN provider Future Broadband, I think I paid $140, ~$20 pricey but already setup and ready to use.
5 stars for Grandstream support, they replay within 2 days and there are very useful user manuals available too.

I’ve been daily looking at this for last 2 weeks. Just when I log off it’s on sale!!

    • So did I, yesterday.

  • Rock solid router

  • This or the RT-AX88U?

    • Where can you even buy the RT-AX88U anymore?

      • Second hand market. Which would be better?

      • I missed it when RT-AX88U was on sale for~ $300 during the Covid lockdown in Vic and the price went up soon after that. Also, those are very hard to find these days. Any idea what really happened?

  • Wow talk about a fly by night deal…

    • +1

And if it were an aircraft, it would've been a fly by wire deal. I'll show myself out.

    • It's available again for $379. I just ordered one now. Hope you manage to get one.

I bought this 2 weeks ago from amazon. Good thing I used my coles mastercard to get price protection.

What's the range on this router compared to the old but true RT-AC68U?
    I have my RT-AC68U running with a Wi-fi 5 repeater RP-AC1900 on AI-mesh.

If I got one of these RT-AX86U the repeater wouldn't run Wi-fi 6.

If the signal on the is RT-AX86U maybe 20-40% stronger than the RT-AC68U. I may be able to retire the repeater.

    • There are some youtube videos comparing the wifi of these two models, and if there is not enough coverage you can use the AC68U as an AI mesh node and it will retain the features of the AX86U.

      • Thanks! But that means the people on the AI-mesh who connect to the 68U will not have wifi six I think.

        • Yeah that's correct, probably less of an issue for 2.4g

  • How can someone tell this is Australian stock?

    • +2

Sold by Amazon AU (as in, the seller is Amazon AU. UK ones will be sold by Amazon UK, and so forth).

      • Make sense, nice and simple. Looking at the cheap prices elsewhere I can see Center Com has it for $449 so would assume they would be also Aus stock.

        • +1

I’d say so. It’s only really an issue when buying from grey stock sellers or international sellers on marketplaces.

  • +1

I bought this router from newegg last week for $348 including shipping (I also needed a keyboard) might go on sale again.

    https://ibb.co/nsYfV5Q

Came with a US plug that is 110-240v

Definitely recommend using the Merlin firmware https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

    Great router!

    • What's all this Merlin about?
The UI seems pretty good (light years ahead of the basic ISP issued routers).
The Asus updates and phone app seem fine but guess people like to tinker.

      • +1

For me, it's the ability to block ads and malware on the router without using the Trend Micro apps (that send all your data to TM).

        It's basically stock firmware +some extra features/optimisations.

Otherwise the stock firmware is great if you prefer not to tinker.

        • Cheers, May look into it, wouldn't mind if they maintain a clean interface and not updating/changing a lot.

          Yeah bloody ads.
I assume you could put in dns.adguard.com in at the router level, or did you buy the lifetime (in the other thread)
I would want to whitelist theh cashbacks to ensure that works but toherwise use uBlock origin on the router.

          • +2

@G-rig: It's all free and open source.

Once you install the firmware you connect to the router using SSH (using an app like xshell) and then type amtm which has a nice interface to install/remove all the extra features.

You can then use diversion or adguard home to block ads, both have the ability to toggle on/off from the UI, diversion is faster but adguard home has a nice web UI for stats and controlling blocking/whitelists so I'd probably recommend using that.

So if you are doing a cashback just flick off the adblocking, then flick it back on afterwards (or whitelist the sites).

            • @h4lcyon: Thanks will have a look, sounds worthwhile i guess ha

I should have jumped on that adguard deal, only the family one is available now (US$16). Don't need that many devices but maybe alright.

In general the AX6000 is fantastic compared to the cheapos from the ISP.

              • @G-rig: If you run it on your router you don't need it on each device, but can whitelist some devices if you wish.

                • @h4lcyon: Yeah defeat the purpose of the 9 device plan.
As long as can white list cashback easily but still probably best to toggle adblock off anyway as you say (which I do on the phone anyway with the DNS settings).

        • Ok I may as well give it a go
Which of these owuld you get (assume non-beta is advisable):

          GT-AX6000_388.2_2_nand_squashfs.pkgtb
          GT-AX6000_388.2_2_rog_nand_squashfs.pkgtb

and so it's worth buying adgard lifetime sub (Family US$16, personal not available on the cheap price)?

          Cheers,

          • @G-rig: Looks like there is a firmware for each type of AX6000, just depends if you have the ROG version or not?

Not sure you need the lifetime sub (I don't have it) but it's up to you.

            • @h4lcyon: Oh yeah the rog version.
So you got the free version or just enter dns.adguard.com at the router level?

              • +1

                @G-rig:

                1. Plug a USB drive into on of the usb slots (it will be wiped)
                2. Follow the instructions here to get into the router shell

                https://youtu.be/qm5wKi_8VkI

Then type amtm to bring up the menu
Then fd to format the usb
Then i and 1 to install diverson

After it's all done adblocking is enabled, and you'll see a diversion tab in the modem UI page under LAN

                • +1

@h4lcyon: Thanks mate will give that a go, shouldn't be too hard!
Edit: forgot my router password again ffs

                • @h4lcyon: Alright that's all done, had to install puTTY and the Merlin firmware on the router first.

Did you worry about Skynet or any other installs and firewalls?

Ps. factory resetting of router and then reloading the setting backup maintained the ssid and reminded me off the password :P.

So no need to dns.adgard.com on the phone now, would you still use ublock origin for chrome or no need?
Guess i need to test some ads, and lok at whitelisting some sites for cashback. will that ensure the SB/CR apps work etc?

                  Cheers,

                  • +1

@G-rig: I also installed skynet and just leave it running, but it is another thing to disable if you want to do cashbacks.

I still use ublock origin, because it hides all the spots where ads would be.

Another thing you can do is just use your mobile when doing cashbacks.

Turn off the wifi on you phone (so you are using the mobile network without adblocking) then it back on once done.

                    • @h4lcyon: Cheers may as well install Skynet too and leave it at that.

I did whitelist the cashback domains but as you say it would be easier to just turn off wifi on the phone.

            • @h4lcyon: ps. does the Asus mobile (android) app stlil work with Merlin (assume no merlin app)?
              Cheers,

              • @G-rig: I think so, I haven't tested though.

              • +2

@G-rig: Yes. I can confirm that it does work OK, at least on the RT-AC68U.

    • +2

      Merlin is the best! Magic
