Churning Away from TPG nbn - Timing of 30 Day Notice?

I'm out of contract now hooray. Do I give 30 day notice to TPG first, wait 30 days then sign up with the new NBN provider?

I just came across whistle out guide saying don't cancel existing plan. But I don't want to get hit by a penalty for not giving TPG 30 days notice or pay double for a month.

Also don't want to be without internet for too long!

Any ideas?

  • read the T&C's of your contract. That will give you your answer.

Most NBN month by months allow you to just leave and pay for the days you used.

Regarding outage time your mileage may vary depending on who you're transferring from, who you're transferring to, what connecting you have (i.e. HFC, FTTN, FTTP etc) as well as other factors.

I recently switched providers a couple of months ago. The outage time was less than 15 minutes, but then i had a friend in a completely separate location switch at the same time, she had some issues and it took her a couple of days.

    • "Most NBN month by months allow you to just leave and pay for the days you used."

Not Spintel. Never go with Spintel if you are outside of Sydney. They charge for the full month when you leave part the way through, "accidentally" charge you for the next month even though they have acknowledged you have transferred, chase you for late fees and can't provide decent speeds outside of Sydney, because everything goes through Sydney.

Thank goodness for single use debit cards.

This is not true for TPG I just left them for the superloop deal posted here.
Called TPG to cancel, the cancellation date was whatever date I requested but I would not be entitled to any refund of the month in advanced I’ve paid. So I picked 30 days from the day I called and requested superloop to sign up the day prior to my TPG cancellation going through.

      • So TPG doesn't do pro rata refund? Do I need to set my cancel date & 30 day notice same as my billing anniversary date?

        • They definitely do not do a pro rata refund as a billing period is 30 days and you pay 30 days in advance. My bill period was 19th Jul to 18th Aug I think so I had superloop take over the service as of 17th August.

Give a 30 day notice to TPG first so that they don't charge you for the next billing period. Your TPG service will continue until your next billing date with TPG. Churn to a different ISP and keep a couple of working days overlap between TPG service end and new service start. The transfer takes a maximum of 48 hrs, unless you are in some remote location. Once the new ISP has started the service, you will have to login using new credentials anyway, in your modem. The TPG service will just be idle for a couple of days until it runs out.

    • Perfect thank you! Just the answer I was looking for.

Also, update your payment method with TPG to a card with $5 balance in it. :)

I gave 30+ days written notice (24 JUL) via [email protected]. Yesterday, spoke with TPG Billing department. They confirmed my ID and cancellation authorization, and put a block in their system on future billing/payment method (24 AUG, which is billed 7 days BEFORE the start of next month's service, and where many customers get caught out with the 30 days notice), with the service to cease at the end of current month's service cycle (31 AUG) as there will be no payment 24 AUG (7 days prior to the next month service 1-30 SEP). Took about 20 mins on the phone, and at the end they sent an SMS with the record id for the cancellation. Will set the start date for the new service with a new provider 3 days prior (28 AUG) to end of TPG service. Leaving after 16 years to take advantage of other churn deals to reduce cost.

          • @ctemby: Same here. Also not very fond of their sneakiness.

  • Don't have a useful answer, but curious why you're leaving TPG and who to? Considering changing away from my current NBN provider.

Consider checking if the new provider has some "churn" option, transferring from someone else to them.

but curious why you're leaving TPG and who to?

      None of your business…

It's because I already served my contract then when I used their move home service to move to another place, they've put me back in a contract. Thought it was a bit sneaky if you ask me. Also there's loads of 6month deals with no lock in contracts I'd like to try out

read the T&C's of your contract. That will give you your answer.

I signed up with another telco and had to pay for the 30 days with TPG since I didn't read the T&C's. I'd cancel TPG and sign up 29 days later with someone else, I also had the issue where TPG failed to cancel my service and billed me for 2 months after but had to call multiple times to get it escalated for a refund. Signing up to another telco was done within hour since it was a transfer too, so I'd recommend doing it whilst still connect to TPG network otherwise you may have to be without internet while it connects from scratch.

Yes TPG are dodgy in that regard. I changed my credit card as well after cancelling with TPG, just update it to a card with a $5 balance. It will save you a headache to call them and get a refund. :)

I gave 30 days notice halfway through a billing cycle, and they charged me prorata for the final month. I think that is the "safer" way if you can wait (still waiting, so don't know how smooth the full process will be).

    • Do you think it's better for me to change my cancellation date to my billing anniversary date POST 30 day cancellation??

      • You'd probably have to call up to check - with some luck, they might let you do so.

Happened to me at Superloop. Give notice 30 days BEFORE the 12 months expire and then connect to your ISP on the day ensuring you are using the SAME UNI-D port as your previous provider (if possible). If not possible (like they greyed out the UNI-D port that your previous provider use), then use another UNI-D port but since you have already given notice, it should disconnect.

  • Warning: they will stall and stuff you around for as long as possible. My 30 day notice was closer to 50 days. It cost me $$

    • Did you use the cancellation form? It asks you for your service cancellation date so it's all in writing?

I contacted their call centre regarding a service issue which they couldn't resolve. I verbally advised them that I was giving 30 days notice. They said they'd get someone from the retention team to call. I sent a cancellation email using a template on their support form.

Retention called me 5 days later and couldn't resolve the issue. A week later they emailed saying use the cancellation form on the website which they hadn't mentioned previously even though I'd asked if there was an online form. It took another week for them to acknowledge the cancelation.

This was a few months back and was the end of a twenty year association with TPG

      • This caught me badly. When I logged in to the account, there is no way to cancel the account so I thought the only was is to cancel via phone.

I called customer service and agreed of cancellation. 3 months later, still getting charged :)

  • WhistleOut is paid advertising, so the more internet companies pay that is their rank listed. It means nothing about quality

  • I submitted 30 day request for cancellation with TPG to finish 1/Sept. Retention team rang me today and is asking me to sign up with new provider, ask them when it's safe for TPG to cancel and let TPG know this date.

Why do they need to know this date? Shouldn't this date be same as the 30 day notice date (1/Sept) i've written on my cancellation request?

Anyway I've signed up with new provider to connect on the 29/Aug. I'm hoping this will work.

    • you have until 11.59pm on 1st September to disconnect, i think you will be fine, what provider did you go with?
