7900XTX/4090 & 7800X3D PC Component Selection Help

Hi
I was hoping for a eofy deal on a 4090 and 7800x3d (for VR sim racing with the new oculus rift 3) but as this did not happen and i most likely would not happen for black friday, so i am here to ask a bit on info on how to select the components for my pc and perhaps roll the dice on 7900 xtx if they fix the drivers for vr.
My preference in cpu would be 7800x3d
Preferred case would be Corsair 5000D airflow, but open to suggestions for similar.

Now, as the cpu is AM5 socket, what do i need to know when choosing a motherboard?

As i am using an AMD cpu, i need to find AMD EXPO ram?

Power supply - i assume 80+ 850w and above or do i need to check some tier lists?

Also, how would one use the pcpartpicker list? Do you compile the list and send it to a local retailer to price beat?

Thanks

You need at least 1000W (I'd go min 1200W) for PSU.

I'd look for one with 12VHPWR. Gold min.

If you're going top parts, get a top motherboard as it needs to properly deliver the power. It's the most important part of big builds. Also get EXPO rated ram. 6000Mhz min.

Most people just set price alerts and wait for the parts to become cheap and buy one at a time. Ebay deals with codes are usually the best.

I’m kind of making the same decision at the moment, choosing between a 7900 XTX and a 4080, mostly for MSFS vr.

Looks to me that even after the recent driver “fix” for the XTX that there are still issues with the driver (VR performance and high idle power draw). Even so, in good examples, the 4080 seems to have a roughly 20% performance lead over the xtx.

For the 4090, it’s not really close. I wouldn’t really consider the xtx against it (if you’re willing to spend $$$).

This is my recent research, too. Some say improvement, but not yet enough to label it as a fixed issue.

    • Cheers. I was hoping the 4090 would drop closer to 2k by eofy but it is wishful thinking. I do not know how well the 7900xtx will work with oculus rift 3 when it comes out and by the time it comes out the black friday will be around the corner. I am not a fan of the 4080s price point.

  • I'm using the 7900XTX and 7800X3D atm, enjoying it

  • OP I recommend having a look at the Lancool III. Reviewed pretty well, gets good thermals (near the top on some cases in the GN tests) and is $230 shipped now. Similar prices to the 5000D

  • How much storage (HDD and SSD) do you need?
How big do you want the system to be? you can get go smaller but there's connectivity and IO

  • Hello, i recently (just last friday) build almost exactly the same build as what you're after!!! - same cpu, gpu, case.

I even posted on a reddit forum to get feedback before making the purchase.

I bought everything from MSY, - not because everything was cheaper, half of the items were at price or cheaper tho.

Here is the PC partpicker list for you if it helps.

The setup was really simple, and i hadnt built my own computer for almost a decade.
the most confusing part was what cables to use for a modular PSU.. and probably the fan orientation/cabling.

    happy to answer any questions.

      Sorry forgot to mention.

You would completely a pcpartpicker list like I have attached and send it to nebula pc or enigmapc (builder of choice).

They will see if they can get parts cheaper and offer you a quote for the full build.

From my experience Enigma PC kinda cheaped out on a few things and came back with quote of around 4800.

It wasn't the worst but I picked those parts for a reason so I decided to buidl myself.

NebulaPC was a lot more transparent and admitted they couldnt get parts cheaper so I appreciate that. (sidenote: I have previously purchased a pre-built from NebulaPC and customer service was on point).

Another option! your local computer store might build your pc using components, I know MSY charges 199$ to build, another local store in canberra was charging $150.

One last option - Jump on Airtasker and post an ad put about $100 there, people will give you a quote to come to your house and build it for you, update bios, drivers, install Windows etc.

I did post on Airtasker and got quotes from $100-200 but decided to build myself and nailed it.

let me know if you need help!
