Cookware Recs for Gas Stovetop

I’ve recently moved into a new place with a gas stovetop and I’m finding that all of my old pots and pans are generating a large amount of smoke while cooking which can’t be safe.

Wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for a decent frying pan that will work well? I’ve been looking into cast iron but not sure how hard the upkeep is in reality.

We don’t cook with much or any oil usually too if that helps.

have you tried washing/scrubbing the pots properly with steel wool and getting all the oils etc off from the outside?
unless youve burnt the crap out of them on the insides they really shouldnt be smoking and has nothing to do with the gas stovetop

    • Hmm, maybe I should give this a try first. They are mostly cheaper Kmart level non-stick pans so I’m worried the coating is starting to come off. I’ll give them a good scrub and go from there.

use really hot water & a quite soapy diswashing liquid mix
leave them to soak for 10-25 minutes
attack them with a steel wool and really scrub the outsides to get the caked on oils / grease off….dont use the steel wool on the non stick coating
if you do this and theyre still smoking when cooking at normal temps, get new cookware

This is user error - either your current cookware is unclean on the exterior or you have the heat up too high or another user variable but it's not the cooktop thats the issue.

What type of oil are you using to cook as different oils have different smoke points and therefore are better suited to different techniques/dishes.

Once non-stick coatings on any cookware starts to come off you might want to toss the pan ASAP as it's a known carcinogen, you're essentially ingesting PTFE/teflon. With proper treatment these cheaper pans can work well but you need to use non-stick friendly utensils with them.

  • Congrats OP for not hiding under the bed every time someone utters the word gas stove.

Get some SS cookware. Keep it clean.
Non stick is disposable crap. If you can't figure out why the current cookware is smoking either ditch it and/or get a second opinion while it's smoking to suss the real cause.

Upload a photo of the cookware that did the most smoking

Don't tell Dan, he is slowly banning them in Victoria.

I'm guessing he has a lot of money invested in companies providing 'green' energy to the Vic government.

    • Waiting for Dan to change his own stove first.

Nah. His seat warmers have been brainwashed by fake asthma orgs just like the ABC….and…
If giant Yank co's weren't virtually stealing our gas and manipulating the market, and the LNP weren't on that payroll, we (Straya) could have transitioned to REAL cheap & green energy long before Dan baby became your personal football.
Now Straya is fully lubed up and making missiles for them as well as being the parking valet for rusting nuclear hulks.
I'm sure the missiles will be carbon neutral, guffaw.

If the govt hit newscrap with a word tax on the word fury Rupert would go broke

    • slowly????

        Don't worry… Dan has thought this through…

He will cover the increase in electricity demand with Vic's numerous power stations

        • What do the power stations derive their energy from?

          • @brendanm:

            GAS !!!

@jv: So you're saying that he wants to stop gas stoves, so you can instead use electric ones, that are powered by gas? Thanks Dan 👍

@brendanm: I find it interesting that just one gas power station at Mortlake produces as much power as all the solar and wind facilities in Victoria put together…
