Do All 40km School Zones Have Cameras?

So near my daughter's school, when I walk her over to the school after parking, there's this side street, although it's not a main road, but it's a marked 40 zone, I notice that almost all the drivers, once they get past the pedestrian crossing, end up driving faster than 40 before the End of School Zone sign is past. I mean you'd expect maybe a couple of cars doing that, but it seems like every car does that. Yes this is during school times too.

I was under the impression that every single school zone had speed cameras, unless I'm mistaken, then what's the purpose of school zones without much enforcing?

Troubling thing is there's a lot of those big ass utes coming down that road too.

Do All 40km School Zones Have Cameras?

    No

    Thread closed.

…what's the purpose of school zones without much enforcing?

Same could be said for any stretch of road / street, etc.

    • +1

Same could be said for any stretch of road / street, etc.

Well, isn't there a larger emphasis on a school zone though?

      • +4

        I wouldn't have thought so.
The maximum speed limit for any road/street is based on the safety aspects of the surroundings (among other things). All drivers should remain under the maximum speed limit regardless of the location.

        • +4

Correct, and the same cohort of drop off mothers are the fastest drivers to and from school, and drive like Van Gisbergen any time they are in carpark. Especially shopping centres. (Drop off Dads seem to be more speed conscious in school zones) I'm all for cameras in school zones, but I'd like to see them used to ping the serial offenders, first. As for micro penii, sorry, big Yank utes, it's a temporary thing (except for farmers who get free tax payer perked fuel) , they'll fade away. They'll end up being homeless shelters, with the shite resale prices ahead. If enough ppl whinge before then (while we have ALP across the board) they might introduce a Behemoth tax.

      • -1

Do you think children more important than other pedestrians?

        • -3

Once I might have said yes. Things change

        • +6

It's not that children are "more important", it's that kids lack the spacial awareness of an adult in the same situation. They also lack the experience of being around moving cars and roads in general.

So, it's not the "children" them, selves, but their lack of awareness and experience that is the issue around school zones.

          • @pegaxs: The lack of awareness and experience is only one contributing factor. The speed of vehicles is another, as are things like the weather, road conditions, traffic density, etc.

            • +1

@GG57: Agree. Let’s drop school zones to 30 and increase policing around them.

    • +1

Yep, and the other form of enforcement is that you'll be (profanity) beyond belief if you hit someone while speeding , or less seriously, void your own insurance in a stack

  • +11

You could say the same for roadworks… near my joint, doin the signposted 40 you get rammed up the choofer

  • +1

once they get past the pedestrian crossing, end up driving faster than 40 before the End of School Zone sign is past.

could they be doing slower than 40 on approach, then go up to 40 after?
how good are you at accurately gauging by eye car speeds?

    without much enforcing?

i was also under the impression the cameras dont have variable detection?
eg school holidays, public holidays, night time etc.

also the 3 school zones around me regularly have random speed traps.

    • how good are you at accurately gauging by eye car speeds?

Not entirely gauging by eye, but literally the car flying past us while we are on the path way.

also the 3 school zones around me regularly have random speed traps.

      With mobile speed cameras?

      • +12

Not entirely gauging by eye, but literally the car flying past us while we are on the path way.

We have flying cars now? Finally, the future has arrived.

    • +1

i was also under the impression the cameras dont have variable detection?

The camera signs (NSW) literally say "variable speed limits enforced"

      • +1

Sorry I meant fixed speed cameras. As in the ones on a pole. As opposed to roadside speed traps or the newer wall-e style ones.

        • +1

I'm talking about fixed speed cameras

  • +8

    I can't believe this is a question.

  • No. And in SA, it's 25 kph. Should see how many people speed through here…

    • I wonder if the markings on every car's speedo even indicates 25km/h accurately…

      • -1

Unlikely but I heard on here once that they tune the speedo to always go under and not over the displayed reading

  • +6

Speeding in school zones is relatively more serious. ie. If you get caught you have zero chance of getting it waived.

    • You can get speeding tickets in other areas waived?

      • +3

In NSW you can. If you have a 10 year clean record you can request a review, and depending on the speed, they may waive it.

        • +1

Even in NSW, it's not the case for speeding in school zones… they classify it as a "serious offence".

          • @bobbified: Oh yes I agree, I just meant that you could potentially waive other speeding tickets. Again, depending on speed.

        • yes i had never had a speeding tix in over 20 years of driving ..i went through a school zone in a side street close to 4pm doing 45km n no chance of getting it taken off

      • Victoria:

Alleged speeds of less than 10 km/h
Correctly verified infringements issued for alleged speeds of less than 10 km/h in excess of the posted limit may be eligible for an official warning if:

no speeding infringements, safety related infringements or official warnings have been issued to the driver in the previous two (2) years; and
the criteria for Good Driving Record are satisfied

School zones, imo, are the only speed zones that people actually adhere to. You see work zones 40km, no one pays attention to it but school zones, people slow down to the crawl

    • -4

I think that only happens in the streets.

Drivers won't bother following if it's on the 60km + main roads and for understandable reasons. Common sense prevails.

  • +2

If we say yes will more drivers slow for the school zones?

  • +1

I was under the impression that every single school zone had speed cameras, unless I'm mistaken

No school zone has ever, ever had fixed speed cameras. But wait you didn't specify state and city. Checks profile…. oh Sydney no wonder.

    • I know if at least one school zone with a fixed camera. Central coast. The signs say ‘variable speed limit enforced’

FWIW all school zones should have speed cameras. And probably should have the school speed limit apply all day(8-4) not just morning and afternoon. (Waits for massive backlash)

      • -1

        Massive backlash!

Children could be anywhere any time, so the argument that the fact that there could be children outside a school between morning and afternoon 40 km/h speed limit times so the limit should be 40 all day is an argument that the speed limit everywhere all the time should be 40 km/h. Fortunately most people with any common sense can see that argument is simply impracticable.

        • Anywhere there are lots of people should probably be 30km/h. Residential streets too.

We’ve spent decades building roads and making the speed limit as high as possible ‘for the drivers’ and made our cities and suburbs terrible to live in. It’s time to turn it around. Keep the arterial roads at a decent speed. Lower it everywhere else. Make it more pleasant to be outside.

There are 45 school zone speed cameras in NSW. Here's where they are:
    https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/document…

And that's OFFICIAL. It says so on the list.

  • I will say that, around my area at least, many of the residential areas have been changed to 40 instead of 50, any time of day. It's not a school zone thing, just residential street speed. If it's a side street and not in front of the school, is it an actual school zone street limit or just a standard 40k limit?
It's impractical to think you'd have cameras at every single 40k limit and if anything, schools are safer as pedestrian crossings & parental supervision.

  • no.. but why risk speeding thru such an area?? you have kids yourself.. why would you chose to endanger somebody else's safety coz you cant get your self organised enuff to get to where you need to be in plenty of time

    • +2

OP is clearly not asking because they want to speed through school zones FFS.

    • +2

you should read the post before commenting or you will look like an idiot

    • Because people driving in/around schools are distracted, on their phones, in a hurry to save a couple of seconds. I've literally been on a pedestrian crossing on a road within school grounds and almost been hit by a person picking up their kids and sitting on their phone.

      • I've literally…almost been hit by a person picking up their kids and sitting on their phone.

If they were picking up their kids, wouldn't the vehicle have been stationary?
If they were sitting on their phone, that would have been uncomfortable for the driver, at best.

        • Their car was stationary, I walked in front of them, car in front moved and they just started rolling forward instinctively. When I eyeballed the driver I watched them look up from their lap. So unless they were extracting their phone from between their legs, my assessment was that they were on their phone and not paying attention.

The hypocrisy with parents around school zones is hilarious.

No. You can dance and no one’s watching.

  • Didn't they only just turn them on after they didn't realise they weren't working for over a year ?

  • doesn't matter, please just do the speed limit and don't kill children.

  • I imagine if you tipped off local police they'd happily set up a patrol there, and if they nabbed a lot of drivers, might make it regular.

No sympathy for speeding, yes it sucks when you accidentally go over, but speed is a major factor (if not the major factor) in pedestrian fatalities.

  • I was under the impression that every single school zone had speed cameras

    Why would they?

what's the purpose of school zones without much enforcing?

Same pupose as every other law in the entire world.

Troubling thing is there's a lot of those big ass utes coming down that road too.

They get caught by the big ass ute cameras that are literally in every single school zone, without exception, that has a sign saying "no entry for those big ass utes".

  • +2

    No, but they should.

  • Why should everywhere have cameras, should I place a camera inside your home as well in case you commit any crimes there as well? Over-policing via cameras is wrong, invasive, and doesn't make you any safer.

Watch out the front windscreen of your car, not the speedometer. Much safer.

  • +1

then what's the purpose of school zones without much enforcing?

Same purpose as any and all speed limits?

  • REPORT TO POLICE AND THEYLL HAVE A COP WITH A HANDHELD BEAMING NEXT TO THE POWERPOLE

    • Or even report to the school itself first if you wanna go thru the staggered channels

  • Recently read an article that QLD is going to test 6 speed cameras in school zones this semester. So no, they are only just starting to add them.
