King C. Gillette Double Edge Safety Razor + 5 Blades $15 @ Woolworths

170

Woolies has quite a few shaving essentials on sale for half price. There’s also a Jack the Barber DE razor at the same price, but it felt very lightweight in the hand and doesn’t include any blades. The King C Gillette razor seems a much better product IMO.

However, Jack’s shaving brush is only $7.50. At this price it’s going to be a synthetic bristle. His blades are $11.25 for a 12-pack or $14 for 10 of the Gillettes, but you’re much better off heading to Vshod.com or Beard and Blade and browsing a wider selection of quality blades at great prices.

  • how good are these for shaving?

    • +3

Most safety razors give an excellent and very close shave with some practice. The blades are incredibly cheap (from $20-$50 per 100).

I do my face and head with a Merkur 34c for about 6 years now and can count on one hand how many times I've cut myself.

      • Safe enough to use on your balls 🤷🏻‍♂️

        • +2

it can get a bit hairy

Safe enough for someone else to use on your balls

These are very average for a safety raise imo. Doesn't get as closer as other safety razors.

The razor im comparing to IIRC was a Fattip from shaver shop $50 but does a much better shave.

I made the switch to safety razor this year. I really like them, but it does take a couple of months to get the technique down.

Basically stick with it and you have a better, cheaper alternative to cartridge razors.

    • Maybe ok for your first one to try to see if you are comfortable and like shaving with a DE Safety Razor. But at some point you will want an upgrade from a good to great shave and get a Merkur and buy Feather blades…

  • Can someone please share the type/name of the blades that come with this razor (the 5 pack), I have found them a lot better than an alternative set that I've ordered from Amazon.

    • It’s most likely the same Gillette blades I linked in the OP.

      • $1.40 each doesn't sound like a good deal?

        • +1

Nope, hence why I linked to a couple of other sites in the OP where you can get blades at a better price. I highly recommend buying a mixed batch of different brands to find the one that works the best for you, because all blades are not created equal.

  • Great for a $15 razor.
If you like it then upgrade to a more popular razor.

Astras are identical blades and they run at $15 for 100.

  • If you want to try out a few different blades on the cheap I’d recommend vshod.

Edit: I should have read the op properly haha

  • In my limited few shaves i have done so far I have found it harder to get a close shave than a disposable 5 blade. I will continue with it though as its good enough and some it will come down to user skill and experience.

I was the same at the start. Try experimenting with different brand blades and shave soaps. Also it can often take 2-3 passes to get all of the hairs.

      • How the hell do you get the bits under your nose? find the edge of the chin problematic as well.

        • I had trouble with this area at first, too. For me, the best action is to rest the leading edge of the razor against the underside of my nose, then gently roll it while following the natural curve of my nose and upper lip. That seems to get everything satisfactorily smooth.

Something else you can try is to adjust the angle of the blade. Loosen the handle by a small amount, like a ¼ turn or less, and this will make the angle more acute so the blade is slightly 'aggressive' - this can sometimes help to get into hard-to-reach spots, it's also great if you've let yourself go for a few days and have longer growth. Tighten the handle again to make the angle shallower and the blade less aggressive for the sensitive spots.

    • I pair this with feather blades.
