[Android, iOS] JOLT Plus Electric Vehicle Charging Plan - Unlimited kWh for $69.99 Per Month @ JOLT App

200

Hi Ozbargainers,

In true Ozbargainer style I spend my spare time crusing the plugshare app looking for free/cheap EV charging points. Well, I'm thinking I can probably spend this down time doing something more productive now (like packing discounted medication for Ozbargainers) - check my other posts if you're feeling confused right now.

Jolt are now offering an "all you can eat" plan in addition to their 7kw free per day plan, they also have a 10kw per day plan for $9.99 per month. The local chargers in my area are a combination of 50kw and 25kw DC Tritium chargers - I've been really happy with their performance and availability.

  • 7kw per day plan = FREE (plus per kw charge over 7kw - at my local charger, the fee is 46c per kw)
  • 10kw per day plan = $9.99 per month (plus per kw charge over 10kw)
  • UNLIMITED kw per day plan = $69.99 per month

$1 per min idle charge applies, FAQ here: https://support.joltcharge.com/hc/en-au/

I think this is a great "deal" if i'm wrong I'd actually really appreciate the collective Ozbargain wisdom telling me where I can get a better deal (SA).

  • $1 per min idle charge applies

Seems no grace period either. Ridiculous.

    • It could be a catch if you go shopping or wander off. To date I've never paid an idle fee (I do spend the time talking on the phone hanging around the car though).

    • +1

Actually it's a pretty good idea. Most batteries rapidly charge to 80%, then charging slows down for the final portion. If it's idle it means you've already been there far far longer than you should.

Without some kind of penalty people just leave their cars there all day

      • +1

I'm not against a penalty, but waiting around for an EV to charge can be slow. At least give 5 mins or so grace time before charging $1/min. Very kogan policy.

    • Maybe you can limit your charge speed in the cars software after 90%

    • 10 min grace period apparently.

Depends on if you have JOLT chargers around you - there are some areas in metro sydney where there are none around eg closest around me is in beecroft or forestville so not really worth it

Yeah it is very weird, Port Road in SA has 14x 2 bay chargers (28 plugs) spread over a few km of roadway - these are all working class suburbs fairly closer to Adelaide CBD, not sure who selected this density of chargers within this area - but I am sure they are now unemployed.

      • funny .. crazy road for EV

      • It's largely depending on how friendly councils are to EV. Many in George's river but none in cantubury Bankstown in Sydney despite they're neighbours

    • Same - for me it's a definite Nah - same Forestville, Beecroft or the ones near Burwood or Manly areas are quite some distance - and 25kW only too

I also have a number of free 22kW (and 7kW) AC chargers much closer to me so they are way more convenient (and free) and if I want to pay a number of 50kW EVIE and 120kW Chargefox DC chargers are much closer and faster

  • Not sure what they were thinking with the 10kw plan for 9.99/month … makes little sense compared to the free plan.

Also not many details about whether a plan is restricted a single vehicle (?) or single vehicle charging at a time (?).

I can see people sharing the plans and it ending badly for the company.

    • +1

They have a fair use policy: https://joltcharge.lt.acemlna.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirect… they seem to be clear about "domestic use" but I can see uber drivers really spoiling this party very soon.

I'm actually umming and erring about that $10 plan - the 7kw per day doesn't really cut it for me, but I think 10kw might just be enough (3kw being the difference between the 7kw plan and 10kw plan @ 46c per kw = $1.38 per day in additional "included" charging on the $9.99 plan so $9.99 / $1.38 = 7.24 days, so if a user did need to power up 10kw per day and stuck with the FREE plan, they'd be better off on the 10kw plan after a week of use vs the FREE plan). This assumes the average punter is happy to go there every day for their "free" or "included" power - that's me though as its almost across the road from my workplace.

    • It says in the FAQs "You can only use one vehicle per account"

      • Not that I'm advocating breaching this - genuine question, when the car and charger do the "handshake" before charging do they share identifiable information? ie/ How would the charger/charging network know if this was breached?

        • +1

I'm getting the vibe their chargers may actually be quite dumb:

          (g) any attempt to access more than the free daily 7kwh of charge from the JOLT electric vehicle charging network, such as the use of multiple accounts or multiple daily charging sessions at different JOLT electric vehicle charging stations. For the avoidance of doubt, only one free charging session per vehicle per day is allowed, regardless of the number of individual account holders who may use the vehicle;

Does this mean they know that users can just jump from one charger to another and get "free" 7kw on each charger per day as their individual chargers don't "talk" to each other?

          • @jason101: No u have to have an account and login to start your session. So unless you have multiple accounts you wouldnt be able to

          • +1

You can also switch accounts and don't worry about moving chargers (as per their FAQ). They might ban you though!

            regardless of the number of individual account holders who may use the vehicle;

This is kind of sh*tty because you might share a car with a few other drivers (eg uber) and don't necessarily want to ask them if they charged with jolt for free already. Also there's no way to the app to skip the free 7kw.

        • when the car and charger do the "handshake" before charging do they share identifiable information?

Yes - just going by tesla superchargers and home wall connectors, they both know about the car. I assume other manufacturers follow similar protocols.

        • im not sure if they actually handshake as verification happens at the account level but would assume they have cameras monitoring

          • @mrshorty:

Nah - too hard to trawl camera footage. I think they check the handshake data later on …

Seems they have a total of one location for Qld, one more than WA gets.

  • Uber drivers can make most of it I guess

    • Too bad it's banned under t and c

      • +3

Only way to make it work is exporting to grid

  • So my personal suspicion is that they are probably not going to care if you share your account between no more than 3 cars (all yours or otherwise) and each car not putting on more than 100kwh per week. I have a few near me but I don't drive much and shopping centre free chargers and 7kw daily free are actually enough for my city driving. Otherwise I might go in for a punt and get a shared account set up with two mates/ozbers

Ovo energy ev plan with 8¢ off peak hours is cheaper for me

  • No deal as did a search of south east queensland and only 1 charger in camp hill so the cost of getting there not worth having this membership

    • Yep JOLT is more for NSW/VIC/SA

      • +2

"For" Vic is a bit of a stretch…there are 3 chargers, all clustered out in the outer eastern suburbs (around Ferntree Gully).

I would say its pretty useless for most Victorians too!

  • thx OP. The 7kw is sweet spot for me. I probably use it about 4 times a week = about 160km/week for free and I have about 3 within 10 minutes of my home. Means most weeks I don't pay for electricity to drive. Takes about 20 minutes per fill so just sit on the laptop and do some work but wouldn't want to stay any longer.

I'm sure the paid would work for some but a little to slow and expensive for me now that I'm on Ovo plan can pretty much fill my battery for under $1 hard to beat.

  • I suspect they will get rid of the the free plan soon.

    • What makes you say this? Since they introduced paid plans?

  • Can’t see the ultimate in the app anymore…
