Recommendations for First Screwdriver Set

Hi guys, any recommendations for a first screwdriver set? Was hoping for something with magnetic tips.

Don't have any specific purpose for it - just for everyday use.

EDIT: not looking for precision sets.

Thanks.

For small stuff - the iFixit Kit if you've got some money, or the Xiaomi/Wiha kit if you want to be cheap. I've got the Xiaomi one and it's like 90% as good as the ifixit kit that I can't justify upgrading.

For bigger stuff - Whatever will do really. I have an alright ratcheting screwdriver that I don't hate - I broke the Stanley Fatmax ratcheting one, but for most stuff I just use whatever screwdriver I have lying around.
Main difference will be if you abuse the cheaper ones too much you'll strip the end.

    Recommendations for First Screwdriver Set

Get one that is both left and right handed.

It keeps it's resale value better.

1D-10T make a good set of ambidextrous screwdrivers

  • magnetic

btw you can just get one of these at bunnings for 8.95 and then EVERYTHING can be magnetic :D

This is pretty decent, just avoid those with soft touch handles, they get pretty gross after a couple of years.

    • Strong agree with this. The included little yellow precision kit is quite good too, and the full size last a lifetime.

    • Was coming to suggest this exact kit.

My motto when buying anying is "buy once", especially when it comes to tools that you're using on, in my case, vehicles.

Stanley screwdrivers are hands down a great buy.

    The Aldi set: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/790090
seems like it would be ok as a starter set.

    • Yeah this one look good actually.

  • This $19 IKEA set (was $12 many years back) has lasted a long time for me: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/fixa-17-piece-tool-set-20169253…

Their drill is good too, works well on soft wood (doors and door frames). See their tools here: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/cat/tools-16293/

  • Got this set in 2010 for $22 to get a free Fat Max tool box and it hasn't failed me in over a decade. It's now $42 but reviews are still good. https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-16-piece-cushion-grip-sc…

There used to be 40/49 Stanley screwdriver sets for $10 on special from Bunnings, but they haven't reappeared and are unlikely to with inflation.

  • The MechPro set from Repco was something like $25 on special and it's become my go to set, highly highly recommend

    • same thing, different colours comes up from aldi a lot.

  • I have the Aldi set and the Stanley set from Bunnings. They are both pretty terrible imo. Get a couple of good Wera ones and you will definitely notice the difference in precision and durability. Something like this https://www.totaltools.com.au/catalogue-offers/exclusive-dea…
Edit - this is a precision set which you edited saying you didn't want but seriously these things last a lifetime. Better to buy once imo.

    • Could you please recommend the Wera set you were referring to? I’m also looking for a first screwdriver set but the link you posted isn’t working anymore.

      • I got these for $36 about a week ago. Wera deals seem pretty regular.
