Man I haven't played this in a few years.
I wonder how they handle the Link Cable features in ports.

    • What could you do with the cable? I remember when I bought both you get a code to transfer your data across games when you finish one.

      • +1

If you owned both games, there were some very useful items you could get gifted via the "Fortunate Link" feature, and you could also transfer Rings between games via the Blue Snake.

So not crucial, but I'm always curious how the official port handles these sort of features, since the homebrew emulators handle it fine.

  • +4

    Still the best Zelda games

    • +10

      Strongly Disagree.

Ocarina of time and Link to the past easily better compared to these two.

Oracle games are great themselves but to call them the best is a big call.

      • +9

        This guy should know

      • +2

        Strongly agree with Link
LTTP is perfection to this day.
OTC is outstanding still, was groundbreaking and genre defining, but shows its age a little.

        • +1

Ocarina of Time has aged way better than LTTP.

Snes version of LTTP needs the original manual to assist in completing it. Otherwise you would just be looking at walk through to get through some parts.

Modern day players don't want to spend too much time figuring things out.

OoT is much more straight forward. Also the music and atmosphere is way better. Even the N64 versions.

I am biased as I grew up with N64 and played LTTP as an adult. LTTP was a grind and just not fun as I couldn't be bothered trying to figure everything out. I didn't know at the time at the manual and map helps alot.

          • +5

@Circly: LTTP literally numbers which dungeons you need to complete on the map. I don't understand how that is not straightforward?

            • +2

              @SupeNintendoChalmers: Username checks out

            • @SupeNintendoChalmers: I duno I just found it a drag and pretty confusing and in the end I just used a walk through to get it over with.

ALBW was alot better and more straight forward. But then that was probably a bit too easy.

              • @Circly: ALBW annoyed me with the item system, LTTP will forever be my fave 😃

          • +2

@Circly: I think definitely a bias thing, played LTTP as a kid and then OOT as a teenager.

I don't recall needing the manual for LTTP but I've finished it so many times that it's just a comfort play for me now annually.
I only remember getting stuck on the ice dungeon on one puzzle, the rest was okay.

Agree games have changed in terms of handholding, personally I don't like it, literally following a wayfinder path in every RPG is just lazy for old schooler like me, where is the sense of exploration when the game spoon feeds the exact shortest route half the time.

          • +5

@Circly: I've played 'em all. Let me settle this for everyone, don't worry 😉

            1. LTTP
            2. OoT
            3. Skyward Sword

All my nostalgia is with OoT, that hit me at exactly the right time in my childhood, I know it in my bone marrow. But I first played LTTP as a 31 year-old and understand innately it is peak LoZ and the one that will subsist as timeless perfection.

But Skyward is the controversial top 3 inclusion. I fell off it at the 2/3rd mark when it released and then heard scathing retrospective reviews in the intervening years until I got pulled in by the Switch release. It starts by feeling very unconventional for LoZ, the controls, the art, the story and world-building, but draws into an increasingly surprising expansion of it's gameplay and world until reaching an amazingly emotive and celebrated crescendo of classic LoZ story-telling. The best structured LoZ of all. The best final 1/3 of a LoZ game.

            • @muwu: Good list but it’s actually really these top 3: 😉

              1. WW
              2. TOTK
              3. TP (wii)

              Special honourable feels:

              LTTP
              &
              the original TLOZ

              • +1

@YoursTruly: I started WW in 2016 and I still haven't finished it despite restarting it 3 times lol

                • @Circly: I feel ya

A quiet Saturday or Sunday ought to do the trick!

WW is quite worthy when experienced in solitude without rushing or forcing it

                • @Circly: I was in the same boat as you. Wind Waker is worth investing your time to complete. It's now one of my top 2 Zelda games.

                  • @thangcuoi: Same boat.. Pardon the pun lol.

Yeah I need to give it a good go.

              • @YoursTruly: I do like to see TP get some love.

                The alternative man's top 3… 😛

                1. WW
                2. MM
                3. LoZ (NES)

I have a place for these, but I just can't get on board with WW. That GC era just felt like Ninty lost some of their depth of detail they've consistently had, I felt the same about Mario Sunshine.

MM shines when you can get yourself past the point of considering it a re-use of assets from OoT, it's dungeon design I found especially creative/clever, more complex, and the mood makes the story and world memorable when you settle in.

LoZ (NES) is actually brilliant and not that far behind what we consider to have become the conventional polish of the series which was perfected by LTTP. I just think you're better off using a guide to help you iron over the unintuitive gameplay design. I don't care if that's sacrilege to the traditional gamer who feels like games are too easy these days, I feel the same about the original Metroid and I can still appreciate how great it is, 80s games just needed development in their design 🤷🏼‍♂️

                • @muwu: WW is my fave, delightful game.

I feel the GC era was the big Ns best era. Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, RE4, Rogue Squadron 2, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros Melee, Ikaruga, FZero GX, Zelda, 4 Swords Adventure, OG Animal crossing, Mario Kart Double Dash.

                  GC era strong.

                  • @SupeNintendoChalmers:

                    GC era strong.

Agree. I missed it, only the Switch re-releases have allowed me to appreciate it.

Man what I wouldn't give to see a remake of one of the F-Zero games. If they can resurrect Pikmin into something that's commercially successful for them now (it's my latest new-found Ninty love), then I'll keep hope they can do it for F-Zero (but I'm stupid, their super expansive MK cannibalizes any market that would play F-Zero).

                • @muwu: GC WW is where my love of the franchise hit the spot - had no expectation going in and it payed off.

I feel the same way as you with Sunshine however. It felt a little non-mario.

For me, despite the lush looking graphics, the way mario animated running around might be whats making it feel off, along with the non mario npc characters and the their lots of chit chatting.

MM, no matter how much patience I gave it over the years (N64, 3DS & VC/ NSO) it just didn’t click with me. The repeating days mechanics did not click with me…and the ‘dooms day’ ‘no hope’ atmosphere/ visuals just felt depressing….yeah I’m one of the odd ones who also felt the same way about OOT….😞

LOZ: I used to loathe it very early on - until after i played BOTW/ TOTK is when I appreciated its make up. Now I quite appreciate it greatly for what it does. Not a smooth sailing without the manual or guide however.

80’s games are a little hard to get back to I think - rare exceptions are select Nintendo games.

TP was the first Zelda game I was full hype about from reveal ! The wait to its release well worth it.
Link in this game was….I felt his Journey.

      • +3

Well exCUUUUUUse me princess :p (yes that show was a horror, but lives rent free in my head)

    • +6

Minish Cap beats the pants of these two games.

They need to release a remake for these two games with the graphic engine from Link's Awakening remake.

      • +1

my personal fave zelda is twilight princess

        • I finally got around to playing TP last year. Unfortunately, it ranks near the bottom of my Zelda game list. Somewhere above Zelda 2. Too many things other Zelda games did better.

    • You must be joking or blinded by nostalgia.

Breath of the Wild is the best.

It blew people's minds when it came out… imagine if it had been released at the same time as any past Zelda game. No one would have played them… keep in mind LttP is one of my favourite games.

      • +4

Surely if you think BotW is better, TotK must be the best. It's BotW but juiced up

        • Haven't played it TBH but you might be right. There is something to say for novelty though.

      • +1

Didn't like BotW at all. Great if you like open-world games that are 90% travel time

      • +2

Botw is quite unmemorable. It had an addictive gameplay loop yes, finding the shrines but the story, characters and music are boring.

OoT will always be GOAT for atmosphere and music.

        • +1

Agree. I actually find BoTW incredibly frustrating and lacks substance but every time I pick it up I can’t put it down, it’s addictive.

      • +2

BotW/TotK are so different from the other Zelda games it's hard to even compare them. They're incredible games though.

        • They are just more advanced versions. A classic Nintendo game combines genres and wraps it up in brightly coloured cartoon artwork. It is still an action RPG/puzzle game at heart.

        • BOTW feels the same as the original NES Zelda to me. Just a 3D version. The other 3D games are amazing, but except for Wind Waker they are very linear. The original game was non-linear. First time I played it on my bday when I got it 30+ years ago I walked straight into the 3rd dungeon. That level of freedom disappeared for years.

      • +2

Botw was good but it’s not a game you will play again . OOT and LTTP yiu can play again easily.

        • You are right. Due to the size it's not a game to replay. Though to be fair once the main game is finished I still found myself jumping back in to find more shrines.

    • Big fan of "link between worlds" to be honest. thought it was one of the better mechanics to be added to a zelda game in awhile.

  • +5

These ones are masterpieces. However, I'm always going to emulate separately, because of those silly grey bars on the side of the 4:3 image on the NSO content! Distracting and terrible on OLED screens.

*Looks over at my Miyoo Mini + with adoration

    • What's the lag like on those?

      Do they support run ahead?

*Looks over at my RG35xx With GarlicOS Installed

    • Thanks for the reminder, must try these games out.

  • +1

Bought these on 3ds just before eshop was closed. Still need to play em!

  • So good

  • Is there any VPN options for cheaper NSO 12m subscriptions like there is for XBOX and PSN Plus?

    • There is a way. But you need to keep your profile on that region to play.

    • @Esteban5150 I have found a 12 month Subscription for ~A$11. But I need someone to test it to see if it works before posting.

    • +3

Join a "family" plan and it's like $10 a year

    • Check OzB classifieds. Get a family sub going. $14/year for NSO+Exp.

    Where is golden sun :(

Glad I got these on my 3DS years ago. I hate having my games locked behind subscriptions but glad for people who get to revisit these.

  • Wouldn't mind legend of the river king, great fishing game

  • The commercials for these games were the most memorable for me.

    So good.
