Kogan 65" faulty backlight advice

I think about 2.7 years ago I purchased a Kogan 65" for $450. It must of have been a Kogan Day deal that was mis-advertised as $450 instead of $500.

The Backlight has gone on the unit. Imagine & sound is there just not illuminated.

Whats the best course of action to deal with this situation ? Is there a possibility that Kogan will repair and anyone had a successful repair returning the exact same unit? Another option is I can probably do the repair as I studied Electronics at school and do it as a hobby. I can probably upgrade to better non chinese components for obvious things like caps, etc.

I don't have the receipt as my late father would have it in one of his mailboxes but I have the payment on my credit card as proof.

Why not start by asking Kogan?

Have your payment proof and TV serial number ready for them.

Also if you do decide to tinker in the back, be very careful. I know of people that have had nasty zaps from sticking fingers into TV internals.

    • My late father was a electronic technician, so i've had my fair share of shocks when I was a kid venturing into the workshop. I did Electronic Engineering in school, Im fine with circuit repairs and custom designing PCBs. I'll give Kogan a ping see what they say..

      • If the whole powerboard is dead (sounds like it, with no backlights at all) it’ll likely be easy to confirm it’s dead and pretty difficult to repair. Various chips on the board probably fried even if it’s just a cap that blew.

It’ll come down to what it costs (even if you can source it) for a board, but if you can get one the fix will be easy.

Kogan won’t replace under warranty. Little expectation a $450 65” TV would last long.

        • I would say isolated to backlight invertor module since rest of the TV works fine just no backlighting. I'll check with Kogan see what they say, failing that I'll check ESR values of all caps and check health of individual LEDS which normally blow.

  • well but its 2.7years outside australia law as well. … plus its kogan…

    • whats the normal time period for Australian Law under 2 years ? I have a Toshiba Tv thats still going strong after 10 years. Probably the last time I purchase anything from Kogan.

  • Good luck with Kogan ;)

  • What did Kogan say?

  • You got a 65" for $450 I think you got the expected life out of it considering it's cheap and nasty, I would call them to see what they say at least..

  • Had the same thing happen to us last night, same TV, same deal.

Don't suppose you had any luck with Kogan?

    • I didn't try had too much going on at the time. I could probably fix it myself. would probably be a faulty LED. Theres a few of them in series and they slowly fail. One side of the screen failed before the rest.

      • Lol, in the same boat. "Too much on", "could probably fix it", proceeds to cart up a 55 incher from downstairs and make do until it blows up too

To be fair, this was just the bedroom tele. Maybe I'll take a golf club to it instead, cheaper than a session with a therapist.

            @Dr Techno: Love it!

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Here's the response I finally got, I asked them if they had any replacement parts or a fix or anything whenever I first replied here.

"Based on the information provided, it appears that the panel on your product has failed.

According to our records, your item was purchased on 26/10/2020. To date, 46 months have passed since purchase, exceeding the coverage period provided under our Minimum Voluntary Warranty Policy.

Given the above, we are unable to cover this for you.

I can advise that a failure of the panel would be considered beyond economical repair, and it would be more cost-effective to purchase a new unit if this is the case.

In the meantime, if there's anything else I can assist with please let me know.

              Kind regards,"

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: Lol oof I replied to myself

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: your in Melbourne we can setup a Kogan TV Support group and repair each others TVs :)

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: Is it just the black light ? If so then should be easy repair. They all would fail due to cheap components especially cheap caps. I'll need to have a go at mine when I get the time. I'm still impressed with my Toshiba LCD. Still going strong after 11 years and no signs of failure.
