Google Nest Camera Solar Charging

Hi Folks,

Can I please get some advice on this? I have several Google Nest Outdoor cameras installed around the house. One of them is running on the Wasserstein Solar Panel. I was going to get more of the Wasserstein solar panels but locations of the other cameras are always in the shade and so the Wasserstein panels do not have enough cable run for the cameras installed at those locations. So I looked around and purchased the followings from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09WDJTMZJ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_p…

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09T8W2ZZT?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_p…

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08G4NJ11F?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_p…

After I plugged everything in and connected it to the camera, on the battery status it said it is "Plugged in" compared to the one with the Wasserstein panel that says "Solar". So for some reasons, the solar panel is not being recognised by the camera.

Can someone please advise if this should work and that there is a fault somewhere in one of the three items I purchased? Or my plan is flawed and I need to change one or all of the items I purchased.

Thanks in advance.

  • It sounds like it's running off solar (what else would it be running off?) so it's just that the software detects the cables or adapters as being plugged into 240v, instead of solar.

Not a big deal if you ask me, still running off solar.

    • +1

The camera has a built-in battery. I will keep it running to see if the charge on the battery is being depleted.

      • If it says plugged in, unlikely it's running off battery but keen to hear your results :)

  • So I worked out that the plug is different for solar cable and the cable that uses the main to charge the camera. They both have four pins but arranged differently. The solar cable has the four pins arranged in a arc around the edges of the plug whereas the mains cable has the four pins arranged in a straight line across the plug. So in theory they should be work, but in this case it didn't work because the cable is too long (I think). The would camera intermittently stop charging i.e. it alternately switched between being "Plugged in" and showing the remaining battery. Thanks for your help anyway.
