Recommend Me a Mortar & Pestle

I broke our cheap ceramic one on the w/e - the mortar cracked under pressure as I was grinding cloves.

Budget is ~ $100 as the cheap one lasted 7 years so I don't mind spending a bit more for a good one.

Let me know your recommendations.

I'm not interested in any electronic appliance version.

It is heavy, but I've never worried about it cracking

Thanks! I didn't expect it to crack either.

Looks good - may go up a size & check with Pete as to when they'll get more stock in of the bigger one.

    electronic appliance version

There's an electronic mortar and pestle option?

Any chunky granite one should be fine, be pretty indestructible, and be way under $100. Pick the size you need/want to start with and search from there

Even Amazon has plenty to pick from

    • The Thermomix, etc.

Thats a knife equivalent, not a mortar and pestle :)

There is in the pharmacy world (Unguator and Samix), but not really affordable for consumers unless you want to spend $1000+ for machine plus the different size jars and grinder blades. You can talk to your local pharmacy about buying pharmaceutical grade ceramic ones but cheaper to buy on Amazon or at Kmart if you're just using it at home.

My tip is to treat the mortar and pestle like a nightclub, not like a bedroom. No banging. Just grinding.

      • You can talk to your local pharmacy about buying pharmaceutical grade ceramic ones …

Interesting. Probably a compounding pharmacy only rather than the local Chemist Warehouse, etc.

  • what material would you like

    • Not ceramic stoneware!

The best kind to grind herbs & spices with.

I have been using the Ikea one for years and it has held up well - https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/aedelsten-pestle-and-mortar-mar…

    • Thanks - I like that it has the shallow side too.

If you tend to 'pound' the contents, go granite, and use it on a cork tile/mat

    • Thank you! I think granite is best to withstand all types of prep.

Solid granite. There's really no need to spend any more. It's literally carved out of rock. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/807293
