Best Debit Card to Withdraw Money in Vietnam?

Hi everyone,

I will be going to Vietnam later in the year and have just found out ING is axing their operator fee rebates starting next month.

Just wondering what people are using now instead. I've had a look around (including this cool page: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra…) and it looks no bank is offering operator fee rebates. Is that correct? What the best option in this case?

One option is open a HSBC account to avoid the operator fee but how common/accessible are HSBC ATMs in Vietnam? I will be going all over Vietnam, north and south.

For paypass transactions, i have a credit card that has free international transactions but I'm trying to find the cheapest way to withdraw money in October.

Any help is much appreciated.

I used Bankwest debit card ($0 international fees) to withdraw while I was there couple weeks ago.

    • What about operator fees?

      • no account fees

  • I've noticed most, if not all banks are now not going to refund or a customer can claim to get the operator fees refunded.

My suggestion is, withdraw here and assume how much you need to exchange in Viet but then again, the exchange fee may be higher than actually withdrawing from an ATM with operator fees (as you already researched, you get transaction fee refunded).

You're only going to one country, either ATM cash out alot there once off withdrawal or exchange AUD over there. But research the all the fees involved and see which one gives you more Vietnamese currency on the same AUD.

Bad idea, pick poketer around the busy place everywhere, though not as rampant as Paris or Madrid but you'll be sorry when your wallet is gone.

Last time I was there it was easier to take a bunch of USD, and the exchange rate was often better in the country than xe.com

$1k usd is easy to carry and goes a long way there.

    • Another bad idea to do double currency conversion, you get stung both ways. Aud get accepted widely among those currency exchange places if you do want to bring in hard cash

  • Where would I get USD from?
    Exchange here in Aus?

  • ING card has no fees for 5 withraws/month (must meet some conditions). You can easily get AUD exchanged at a good rate while over there, I wouldn't waste money changing to USD first.

ING just updated their rules. From August, they won’t be refunding international ATM operator fees. Not sure what it’s like on Vietnam, but some overseas banks charge very high operator fees and I’m trying to avoid this

  • Anyone recommend a debit card for going to europe? hoping to have something that doesnt incur international transaction fees and overseas ATM withdrawls fees

Depend on how much you want to withraw. You can use Citi Plus and withdraw from their citi ATM/OCB ATM. There is one right at the airport arrival after collecting the baggage. Max is 8M/transaction. Otherwise the fee for withdraw at the big 4 bank in VN is cheap anyway (~1-3$/transaction). You can carry some AUD cash and exchange at the local bank. Dont forget to bring your passport for that. Not recommend to exchange at Jeweller shop becauee it is illegal and the fine ~20x-100x the amount that you exchange and you may get counterfreit notes there b/c you are foreigner.

  • Comm bank

  • Theres a bank there that doesnt charge fees to withdraw. Was there a few weeks back

    • Which bank?

      • See danieltr post above.

        • Citi bank is being bought out by NAB - that will be gone too?

  • I paid with my Up Bank debit card where possible in Vietnam and Singapore and got the mastercard fx rates with no foreign transaction costs

    • Which ATMs did you use? I’m going over soon and was going to use my Up card too. Just wondering which ATMs have the cheapest withdrawal fee and are the safest?
