Suggest a Smart Watch for Apple iPhone

Hello Bargainers,
I'm looking for an alternative option of Apple Watch that is compatible with iphone. I don't want to spend $500+ on Ape watch. Budget is up to $300.

Watch must have:

  1. Decent battery life,
  2. bluetooth to allow read and send texts

Nice to have:

  1. Initiate phone calls from watch or receive it.

For some more context, I have iphone 12 mini. Please suggest some options that doesn't break my wallet.

  • Initiate/receive calls.

    on a watch?

    • Yes, if that exist.

Yes, it does. Apple Watch. You can receive calls on an Apple Watch.

You can keep looking but will eventually realise nothing comes close to an Apple Watch. Especially when already have an iPhone.

Not the time to buy now though, new ones should be on the horizon in Sept soon. They'll push down current version prices.

You signed up for Apples walled garden ecosystem, so the only watch that plays well with iPhone is Apple by design ;)

    • How about the fancier FitBits?

      • Cannot initiate or receive calls. Only get notifications and maybe answer if you have a Bluetooth headset connected.

  • You must have a reason to not want the Apple Watch for the iPhone, because it'll help us choose an alternate.

So it's budget? Do you need the watch to have standalone cellular?

There are refurb Apple Watch SE 2s (non-cellular) for $339 which combined with the discounted gift cards on atm get you close.

    • Yes, budget constraint. No need for standalone cellular. Happy to consider refurbished if they are close to $300.

Then the refurb is the one for you. Just hop onto the Apple Store, Watch, Refurbs. It's the smaller one though. Bigger one is a little bit more.

    • You can get brand new SE2 watches for $360

As someone who tried really hard to like android watches with iPhone, I say don’t waste your time.

  • The only watch that works well with the iPhone is the Apple Watch. If you can't afford the latest and greatest, get a used one.

That's the price you pay when you choose to buy into Apple - the iPhone might have been a similar price to the equivalent Android, but when you want a similarly-featured smart watch, you pay more, when you want wireless earbuds / AirPods, you pay more, and every time you need a new cable, of course, lightning cables are far more expensive than USB-C.

Not being critical of those who actively make that choice, but it is a choice nonetheless.

That is a bit of an oversimplification. If you're buying top end Apple products you pay a lot, but there are cheaper alternatives, and you can also buy 2nd hand. I got my iPhone for $200 2nd hand, my apple Watch 2nd hand for $130 (it can make and receive calls, read and send texts), and my mac Mini new for $900 (it's faster than any equivalently priced windows desktop machine).

      That's $1230 for a well-integrated ecosystem that can't be matched by an android/windows equivalent.

I've tried other smart watches (Samsung, Huawei), and they are years behind Apple Watch in reliability, accuracy, features and ecosystem integration.

In regard to earbuds, there is no compatibility issue, you can buy any one you want on Amazon or wherever because they all work via bluetooth. You pay more if you want Apple AirPods, which have features unique to Apple products.
