Booking.com: Upsized 10% Cashback (Was 6%) @ Cashrewards

363

Not as good as the 12% before but may still be of use to some.

And yes, some prices do get inflated. So it’s best to compare cashback vs non-cashback price.

Cashback is ineligible on the following:

Car rentals, flights, and non-accommodation bookings
Use of any Booking.com refer-a-friend links, codes or any non-Cashrewards incentives (offers, links, newsletters, secret prices), unless stated as eligible on this site.
Travel that is not consumed
Items that are cancelled, returned, exchanged or refunded.
GST, other taxes and delivery fees.
Fraudulent transactions.
Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts and price-matching.

I recently booked a holiday. The cashback through CR was 10%, but the price of accommodation going through CR was ~10% higher, so I noped out of it.

You have to check, often it’s the same price so this is still quite a good deal

    • where did you end up booking from that was cheaper?

    • Also i generally use booking as a way to find places to stay then book direct on the business website, i already saved 10% on my trips this week

  • +4

Yes! I only just worked out this was going on! Extremely frustrating. I had to keep swapping browsers & IP addresses for it to stop quietly bumping up the prices, and it is a lot of fiddling around. Especially as a cashback is more trouble-prone than a genuine discount

Also price can differ between mobile and web as well so have to compare at a minimum
      1. Price before cashback vs price after cashback on mobile.
      2. Price before cashback vs price after cashback on web
      3. Price before cashback on web vs price after cashback on mobile. Repeat for Firefox, Chrome and Edge.
      4. Price before cashback on mobile vs price after cashback on web. Repeat for Firefox, Chrome and Edge.
      5. Price before cashback on web in incognito mode vs price after cashback on web in incognito mode (repeat for different browsers and repeat again for different vpn addresses)
      6. Repeat all above when signed into booking.com account vs non signed in.
      7. Repeat all above using mobile browser vs booking.com app

Really wish the ACCC could look into this practice. The whole online travel booking market gives a faux impression of competition when it's manly Booking and then the expedia group given expedia, Wotif, trivago, lastminute, hotels.com.au are all owned by the expedia group.

A lot of time if you contact the hotel directly they will be happy to beat or at the very least match the 3rd party booking price. Most places rather have your business directly over paying a commission to booking sites.

          • +3

@illusion99: I unfortunately beg to differ. I have had about a 10% success rate of price matching direct. I have no idea why, surely the commission paid to the online travel agent makes it logical to price match.

Most recently, I tried to get Pullman Sydney Hyde Park to price match and was told no.

            • @hypie: Depends on who you talk to. Some people just can’t be bothered adjusting the rack rate as sometimes the hotel systems make it harder to do (but not impossible). And as a humble employee it doesn’t matter to them what rate you pay

        • +1

yes it has become like the main spectacle maker and its many 'competing' brands

        • They are too busy screwing over regional Australia telecommunications, turning a blind eye to airlines etc to bother.

      • You forgot checking the price through websites like skyscanner as they often get exclusive prices on hotels, making it even cheaper than these offers.

Wotif currently has 12% on ShopBack.

    • It was 14.5% in the morning

  • Booking.com recently disabled my account after I've booked a few hotels for "security reasons" and would not enable the account again. Not too sure what's going on here, but I've decided to try and cancel all of the bookings made in case they're in limbo.

    • I doubt booking.com would be in limbo

Booking.com trying to do airbnb style bookings. Got caught out last time, host forgot to clean and left the house a mess. Called booking.com, they couldn’t do anything and no alternative booking options.
    Never again booking.com…

    • +7

I wouldn't even bother with private residence on booking.com

      Hotels, motels and resorts only

    • Uh oh. I booked one next week. Booking.crap

  • +1

Nah yeah i never book through cashback sites anymore. Even with cashback considered, I still find it cheaper to book through hotels.google.com

    • +1

agreed. you must book with your eyes open now. it wasnt this bad previously.

  • It's always cheaper to call the place directly for a price. I saved $500 calling directly for my family holiday in Jervis Bay during the Christmas break.

    • Did your desired place beat the cashback + booking.com genius discount as well ? - For same number of people and beds ?
Whenever I try it is just too much effort, and they keep haggling so much, so that it has just never been worth it for me to get hotel to price match or beat booking.com + the extra cashback.

      • It beat them all. I used to use Cash Rewards religiously I was up to $1600 in my account a few years back. For hotel accommodation it's just not worth it. Always call the hotel directly for a price

    • Whilst i agree with the sentiment to try and book directly and get a better price my experience is extremely mixed. Two trips this year, Vietnam and Thailand, they have not provided a better price than i was able to get using a combination of site price cycles + cashbacks. Much to my disappointment.

  • is it only for stays until end of september?
