Suggestions for a Data Recovery Software

Hi all,

Lost all data on my external hdd, around 300gb :( any suggestions for a free data restore application pls

    Depends on circumstance :/

    If it's a hardware error (power, PCB failure, Head failure, etc), your are SOL :/

    If it's some sort of partition error (like unplugging drive without disconnection first), then try TestDisk …

    If it's a File Allocation Error (old drive, bad sectors, etc), then try Recuva …

    If you want Payware that will just get the data without stuffing around (but software has a learning curve), then buy R-studio …

    There are cheaper recovery tools like GetDataBack and EASUS Data Recovery Wizard … But, IMHO, after 100s of recoveries, they are nowhere near as effective as a solid workflow in R-Studio (image damage drive > recover from image > write to separate drive) ;)

        If it was a "Quick Format", then TestDisk will recover it quickly (will restore the partition data) …

        If it was a "Full Format" (ie takes hours), then you are SOL …

          I highly suggest not doing a in spot partition recovery, there is a small chance things can go wrong.
          My recommendation is always to byte by byte clone the risk to another medium first and then attempt recovery.

          I've got the software tools to do the recovery and have done it a few times for myself and others.

    If the data has been lost through a physical drive failure (ie not solely a software problem), then applications (which are software) cannot restore your data. It’s like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Software applications can only resolve software related problems.

    i had a wd green 3tb lose its logical disk due to corruption, i used all the recovery progs, the only one that recovered most the data was getdatabackpro

            @ozzyoi: Just make sure you recover to a different disk.

              @garetz: Thanks, I have the Easeus running since last 3 hours. Just installed getdatabackpro. Will run this as well. Its a 1tb hdd, expect it to run overnight?
