Recommend a Cheap Wi-Fi Router for Use with HFC 1000/50

Hi all,

Looking for a cheap wifi router to use with HFC 1000 connection.

Needs at least 2 ethernet.

Will be using approx 5 wifi devices.

Small 2br apartment but double brick construction.

Hoping to purchase from Amazon for quick delivery (not essential if massive bargains to be had).

Can I get away with a mercusys ax1800 or a wavlink ax1800 for around $80?

Or should I get something like the Asus ax56u for closer to $180 (missed the deals last week unfortunately).

Thank you!!

  • Spend $20-50 on a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 of FB martketplace or Gumtree etc.
No mention here about needing Wifi 6 so go with the tried and tested device.

  • +1

Asus they cant be beat for speed, streaming and gaming

  • HFC is unrelated to 5G mobile internet.

If you need the full Gigabit downlink usable on one machine over Wifi (e.g. torrenting to your NAS) then you're going to need a pretty beefy router and wifi card.

If you only need 200Mbps to each machine over Wifi then you can get away with something a bit weaker*

*walls in between, wall material, metal sheets, and faraday cages like microwaves are also a consideration

  • None of those options are going to saturate that connection over wifi. You will need a more powerful router, but also all your wifi clients will need solid NICs (doubt they are all Wifi 6 etc).

What's more important is having a reliable router - I would go with the ASUS on the basis that their stock firmware is pretty decent. Anything that needs the full pipe from your internet you should try and wire up via ethernet.

  • Small 2br apartment but double brick construction.

Double brick is presumably the outside walls, which wifi doesn't need to get through. Are the internals hollow or concrete?

Single wifi router will probably cover the entire place unless it's tucked away somewhere silly like behind a bathroom wall. All the brands you mentioned are probably fine.

  • OP responding to all and updating purchase is made

Internal walls probably single brick but many of them between front door and back door

Roger that on Asus, I would have gone for it if I needed this on prime day! So unfortunate

Only mentioned hfc meaning router and not modem router but yes I take the point

All devices are not wifi and no need to saturate them all. Ethernet used on the PC so making sure I have gigabit lan ports.

Probably should have gone second hand given how many bloody routers people go through!

Ended up going with the mercusys for 80 bucks, can always return if not happy but I just need the job done.

    Thanks for input folks.

    Asus next time :)
