Sydney Trains Apprentices 2024 Intake

Not sure if this is allowed but thought it'd be nice to let anyone interested know that Sydney Trains are open for applications for their apprenticeships.

They don't discriminate age if you're worried about being too old for an "apprentice." Could be good for anyone looking for a career change.

Below I've linked the pages to the electrical trades and mechanical trades which have may have any information you seek.

Sydney Trains Electrical Apprentices 2024 Intake

*If you want to come out of the apprenticeship with an Electrical Licence, you should aim for Signal Electrical or Substations.

Sydney Trains Mechanical Apprentices 2024 Intake

Applications close: 11:59 pm, Sunday 6th August 2023.

Cheers.

Commencing base gross salary for Apprentices is
$638.70 per week or $954.65 per week for apprentices aged 21.
      In addition, employees receive:
      • 10.5 per cent superannuation
      • Penalty rates (as applicable)
      • Shift allowances (as applicable)
      • Annual leave loading

That ~50% increase just for starting aged 21 is pretty sizable.

Didn't realise state governments also did age discrimination, like Maccas. If the workload is the same, why is the pay lower for 20 year olds?

        • +2

The lower [junior] payrate is because they require more supervision than older adults, especially in mechanical or electrical work.

          https://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay-and-wages/minimum-wages/juni…

The junior pay rate presumably existed to fix youth unemployment, since if the business is given leeway to pay juniors less then they are more likely to hire school leavers or youths who are desperately in need of a first job, although its anyone's guess if that actually works the way it is intended to.

        • Not sure why I'm being negged so heavily, was a genuine question. Is the phrase 'age discrimination' not an accurate way to describe the fact that a 20 year old gets less than a 21 year old adult. I did see the response and it makes sense but anyway…

Because it's easier to exploit minors

Do you think it would really matter if the application was running a bit late?

    • Is this a trick question?

    • +2

You only get shortlisted if your application is late.
