Sushi Nori - Country of Origin Not China

We make sushi at home and have only bought Nori from South Korea or Japan from small Korean/Asian grocers.

The majors only seem to carry nori from China. Are there any other stores that stock non-Chnese nori?

PS: Out of interest, does anyone know where do the sushi sellers get their nori from? China because it's cheaper?

          Possibly gastrointestinal security.

          After a continuous series of food scares, it seems quite reasonably that someone might have a preference for Japanese or Korean sources, especially for a food product that is traditionally associated with those counties.

          Most food from China is no doubt fine, but there's a reason that baby formula was being hoovered up in Australia and NZ the shipped over the to Mainland prior the covid lockdowns.

          Personally, when I was in Asia I stopped buying NZ labelled produce because it had become a laundering centre for Chinese produce. I think this has been since rectified, but haven't bothered to check recently.

          Life is too short to constantly spend balancing up doubts about food safety in regimes with regular demonstrated scandals indicating systematic problems.

    Since it is oil fried it also expires faster.

We've also been making sushi at home (just makis, really), and I never thought of looking where the nori was from 🙄 We're pretty strict on the stuff we feed ourselves here, so we'll look for that now. However, in all fairness, the Japs are not always 100% either; plenty of junky processed fake food everywhere in Japan: transfats, HCFS, MSG, sugar and seed oils galore (I just came back). I was surprised; in my mind the Japanese were much healthier than other Asians (I guess I had the Okinawans supercentenarians in mind). Just recently it dawned on me that that green in seaweed salads is waaay too bright. I asked around to a couple of sushi vendors, and the trusty ones did confess it was food (i.e. artificial) colouring. Once again a food I once thought was super healthy turns out to be yet another poison apple.
