Places to eat, breakfast in Kowloon, Dinner in Hong Kong or Kowloon.

Hi peers, I'd like some recommendations for places to have breakfast in Kowloon, staying at the Harbour Grand Kowloon, and dinner either in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island (there for 6 nights/5days, 2 other nights at HK Disney-we paid for b'fast there as we were made aware there's nothing else around the area).
In the spirit of OzBargain, preferably somewhere at the very least 'value for money', if not a bargain.
We are a family of four, 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 4 and8), fortunately they are not vey picky and eat many veggies ( I know, Iknow, -nobody likes a show off!).
We will try as hard as we can to NOT eat at McChucckies and the other usual suspects, as we don't do that here.
Any suggestions? I will also head off to TripAdvisor, see what they say.

Cheers!
P.S. my other post re:Accommodation(http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/77239).

openrice.com is the site you need

  • I don't know if you have looked at the location of the Harbour Grand Kowloon but it's a little out of the way in Hunghom. Don't you get breakfast included in a place like that? If not, there's a nearby shopping centre with a food court where you have your pick. Don't know if you like congee, but that's what I would eat in HK for breakfast, like the locals.

Around Hong Kong, there's quite a few places called Cafe De Coral. They usually have decent food that tastes nice for a relatively affordable price. They offer different meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner

+1. They have a menu at the cashier which makes it easy to see what you will get.

You can try their baked pork chop with fried rice if you haven't already. It's their signature dish.

Definitely Cafe de Coral, MX or Fairwood. I highly recommend trying Australia Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司, it's quite far from where you're staying (located in Jordan) but it's a must go for me! They have the best scrambled eggs on toast :)

Here's a link to a blog I found on it:

tried the scramble egg … its ok, not as amazing as reviews say it was.. not worth the queue outside… its really cramped inside and the staff is very pushy with getting you out asap (I know its HK but geez, never been this pushy before…). I rather go next next door to Mak Man Kee and have wanton noodle which I reckon is pretty good

yeah, the hotel is in Whampoa.. food is ok there (not really a foodie suburb)..if you back track a little and go to kowloon city, there's a lot of good asian/thai restauarnts and also a place that is famous for its halal beef cakes/curry

I think Cafe de Coral use to be cheap but when I last went back, it wasnt that cheap anymore… there was a bit of debate about it a few months back when their roast goose with rice is more expensive than the best roast goose place in hk

do you have an iphone ozf1? if you do, download this app "Open Rice".. its like eatability for Hk ( there;s english) and you can search places by suburb to see where is good to eat..

      hope this helps

      • Much appreciated, unfortunately I don't have an iPhone (xperia-android), I will most likely get an iPad though (wi-fi only), is there an iPad version of this, I'll look into it. Thanks again.

  • Cheers all, will look into it.
green possum, (adding the buffet b'fast to our accom. package did not make it cheaper etc.).so we decided not to pay for it, to have the choice of where to go, but if we decide to have breakfast at the HGK, it won't cost us more to pay for it once we're there.

You won't run out of places to visit for breakfast and lunch.

Hong Kong is packed with places called cha chaan teng which serve primarily western style food, but often have staples like pork congee, noodles or the sweet custardlike douhua which you definitely have to try when you get there. It's much better than the ones they sell in Meetfresh in Aust.

In Hong Kong, I recommend firstly Tim Ho Wan. This is a really cheap place with one michelin star, for their barbequed pork buns, which are delicious. The only trick is that the place is so busy, you will have to get a number for lunch or dinner, and then come back 2-3 hours later. Just make sure you go to the Mong Kok original branch. Google for more info. Might end up costing you $20 for four people to eat there, amazing place.

Secondly, my HK friends took me to a place that was great, and right near TST. They use these original style centrepieces that no one uses anymore, filled with charcoal, to heat the water. Here is the link: http://www.openrice.com/english/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=34…

Was very cheap, we had lots of veggies, lots of meat and a whole Peking duck and including drinks it was like $15 a head. Ask them to help you make up the sauce combo from all the ingredients. You might need someone who speaks Chinese to help you. If you don't know any, just pull a random couple off the street and offer them a free dinner :)

Lastly, while waiting for our number to come up at Tim Ho Wan, we were starving so we ate some fried chicken at this place which was some of the nicest fried chicken I ever ate and very cheap: http://goo.gl/maps/oYv1m

If you do a day trip to Lantau island, there is some nice food in the Tai O fishing village. I still have dreams about this giant oyster covered in cheese I bought there.

If you have an iPad, install Yelp.

Went to Tim Ho Wan in July. BBQ pork buns were great but the rest was pretty overrated. We ordered about 12 dishes, and they were basically all dumped on our table pretty much as soon as we sat down, meaning most the food was cold by the time we got around to eating it.
