Mate $1 Deal about to Run out, Where to Now?

Hi all,

A few months back I got onto that mate deal $1 a month for 3 months. It's been great although my time is almost up at the cheap price.

Just wondering where everyone else in the same boat plans on going? (Can't see any boost with cashback deals going at the moment).

It doesn't help you, but since you asked… I went from the Mate deal to the Tangerine deal and am currently on a Boost $30 starter pack that had a cashback deal. I have enough Boost, Vodafone and Belong ($80) starter packs to keep me going for another year or so. (I plan ahead, and keep track of them all on a spreadsheet.)

The only el-cheapo options that I can find at the moment are Lebara (on Vodafone) 25GB / 30 day starter packs for $6 from Woolworths (watch the expiry dates), Amaysim (on Optus) 8GB / 28 day starter packs for $7 from Coles, or you could pay $5 ($12, with $7 cashback) for 40GB / 28 days on Amaysim by going via Cashrewards.

    • Thanks Colin, a few options in there to tide me over for a while :)

    • Good info.

      • It's since changed with the latest catalogue cycle (Wed - Tues), as it usually does, but sometimes you can still find specials in-store that aren't in the catalogues. eg; The basic Lebara 4GB (with a bonus 4GB) for 30 days is at my local Coles (Chisholm, ACT) for $4 (usually $14.90), but once again, watch the expiry dates. Some of them don't seem to have an expiry date printed on them, but those that do have all expired.

Yeah I went to Woolies tonight and there was no sign of the Lebara offer.

Feels weird having to scrap around for a spare phone SIM deal, after years of the six-month Amaysim/Groupon/Cashrewards deals and also the Boost/Cashrewards "profit" deals more recently!

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: Picked up on of those $4 Lebara cards today. Hopefully it works. Will tie me over for another month. Just don't tell the blokes in the Cashrewards/Boost threads that I paid for a SIM!

  • In case it helps, MATE offer $10 off per month if you bundle your NBN and Mobile.

I was already with MATE for NBN, and I moved my mobile across for the $1 per month deal. Now I’m just going to stay because the $10 off makes it pretty competitive.

    • Interesting. Is the mate NBN ok? My mobile reception is good but I've heard their customer service is pretty terrible.

      • I moved from AussieBB to MATE about a year ago and the service has been fine, although my peak down speeds are slightly lower (AussieBB 51Mbps vs. MATE 47Mbps). Doesn't matter to me because MATE base prices are $10 cheaper than Aussie BB.

As for the customer service, I've only had to chat to them once (via email) - they were fine. I haven't had to call them yet.

Also, another perk to MATE mobile is the data banking, which none of the previous budget mobile carriers I was with offered (Circles.life, Moose, iinet..). So yeah I'm pretty comfortable with the bundle arrangement so far. It's price competitive and I don't have to jump mobile carriers every 6-12 months for the near future.

was wondering the same, Boost cashback seems stopped after EOFY 2023, my next move is the last Boost SIM I bought in 29.June, then Mate $1 deal (only a month now), I probably will get Labara next as Colin2905 suggests.

  • I have 400gb of rollover data from my main SIM that I never use for data, I'll have to switch to that and hope that a new deal pops up soon.

Getting six months of Telstra 5G out of Mate has been wonderful.

  • I tried to port away from Mate tonight to Boost and was denied because I chose Pre-paid instead of Post-paid.

    • oh, so is Mate postpaid?

Well, I complained to their help desk that I could not port out and they told me that they are post-paid and I had to quote my account number.
I then provided this info to Boost to be able to complete the port out.
