eBay Seller Sent Wrong Items. Offered 30% Partial Refund as Compensation

Ordered two tyres on eBay & seller sent the wrong size wheelchair tyres. Let them know about their mistake via eBay which auto generated a return request, so I have received a shipping label from eBay and am ready to send back to seller.

Seller has sent a message separate from the eBay return message stating:

According to our policy, if the customer does not like the product to return the goods for their own reasons, the return freight will be borne by the buyer. And please note that it could take both of us more times to complete this return issue.

Therefore, considering that it will cost a lot of money and time for you to return it, we suggest that you can resell your item to others, or give it to a friend. We are willing to give you 30% partial refund as compensation, could you please kindly close the dispute?

I have let them know I'm returning the items and I want the correct size tyres that I paid for or a full refund and am sending the return later today…..and that obviously I don't want a partial refund.

I figure that should meet requirements for a full refund via eBay or PayPal with photo evidence and receipt of goods by the seller.

How to proceed…? Anything I'm missing?

You are 100% in the right, ask of a full refund or the correct tyres. This ws not "you not liking the goods for your own reason". Do not close the dispute and return them. Once it has arrived to them, if they don't refund you. eBay will step in.

yeah pretty cheeky of them to imply that i 'changed my mind' when the order clearly states the tyre size i purchased.
i ordered a pair of 24" wheelchair tyres and they sent me a pair of 20" tyres instead…the ridiculous thing is the listing has 6 different sizes and colours to choose from so sending the right item is kind of critical!

Hahaha neg the muppets and get your refund. These scummy joke sellers should be torn a new one…

    • +6

definitely will neg once refund has cleared. shitty communication on their behalf (auto-message?) & weird seller location setup too….
says in their profile china but package was sent from eastern suburbs of melbourne…?

Ask comrade Dan for a refund!

  • @Baysew ….not automotive tyres mate. wheelchair tyres!

    • +2

No big matter. Distracted with the thought out how at odds eBay's current advertising eBay Money Back Guarantee- Who's Karen? is to the wheelchair sellers suggestion of " you can resell your item to others, or give it to a friend"

      • +3

I’m surprised they didn’t say just buy a smaller wheelchair.

  • +2

Wheelchair tyres are not the kind of thing you can just gift to someone or resell easily. Perhaps they would rather you throw them in the bin than pay for postage, you should ask them. Bin them or send back for refund.

If only there were local reputable Strayan retailers who sold these vital disability components

posted it this morning and took lots of pics with the label attached at auspost and have the send receipt and notification from auspost in case they try to pull the shifty 'didnt receive' or 'sender didnt send' ruse…

    Bahah, they cooked it.

  • +2

    That's so scummy of them.

    • agreed. they havent even admitted theyve sent the wrong items, apologised or anything of the like!

  • +2

This sounds like a scam, not an innocent mistake, how can you accidentally send the wrong size of tyres.

    • not only that, theyre a very odd size and one that would not be ordered often….
24" is the standard size wheel/tyre for an adult's wheelchair, a 20" wheel would be for a child's wheelchair and seldomly ordered in comparison

Provided the purchase is within the "30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery/collection date" period then the eBay Money Back Guarantee applies and you're entitled to a full refund, you may even be able to get a full refund without having to return them if you're lucky, otherwise eBay will issue a return label (At the seller's expense) and you can return it to get a full refund.

Sounds like a typical Aliexpress chinese seller response or something.
The '30% partial refund as compensation' is a joke of a solution. Yes no worries, I'll take 30% and be left with tyres that can't be used - How did they think that would be a viable option? To me that's their attempt at a 'Cop Out' solution so they walk away still profiting from that sale while leaving you in a shit situation. Sounds very 'We don't give a shit about you' in my opinion.

Imagine if a retailer did that? You open your box, there's something else inside, you take it back and the retailer says oh sorry for that, best we can do is offer a 30% refund'

My personal opinion on the matter is that if they took onus on the mistake (Mistakes happen, shit happens - Do the right thing and fix the damn issue) then I'd say let bygones be bygones (and maybe even leave positive feedback if they fixed it promptly and took onus regarding their mistake) but because they're trying to cheap out and walk away in the best position by offering a 30% refund and leave you with tyres you can't use, I'd say proceed with the 'eBay Money Back Guarantee' claim, get your refund and then leave negative feedback.

Regarding leaving feedback, I don't want to say too much, but if you mention anything about the eBay case or getting eBay involved in your feedback then eBay will remove it (At the buyers request)

The 'Item not as Described' case also affects the Sellers 'Service Metrics' which dictates if they continue to be a 'Top Rated Seller' or not (The only difference between Top Rated Sellers and Above Standard Sellers is the fees they get charged per sale, one entitles them to slightly cheaper fees per sale) which I think is more than valid in this case especially if they're doing this constantly.

    • Sorry, slight correction to the above:
"if you mention anything about the eBay case or getting eBay involved in your feedback then eBay will remove it (At the SELLERS request)"

    • yeah i laughed when i saw their offer of 30%…and i agree its very shifty aliexpress like behaviour. did not expect to get that on ebay and its a first for me

I had a similar experience with some headphones. I ordered a specific type of headphones (RF). They sent me a completely different one. Then they offered a 30% refund, claiming the headset they had sent me was more expensive than the one I ordered. When I said I didn't want a 30% refund, they increased their offer to 50% and then to 80%. When I still said No, they refunded the full amount and didn't even want the incorrect headphones back.

I suspect they do this on a regular basis, as I suspect a good proportion of people would take a 50% or 80% refund.

    • …haggling on a refund, ffs. is there anything ebay sellers wont lower themselves to?

  • Remember to take as many photos as possible before you send the item back. That way, you will have enough proof if you have to go via eBay dispute

  • +1

yes full refund and post tires back to seller seems like the logical way to fix this issue

    • sent it back via ebay return and got a refund as soon as they received it…left some honest feedback to warn other buyers so they dont waste their time like i did.
managed to find the same tyres even cheaper…just waiting on slow shipping but no biggy, half expected that & its still better than paying 400% markup buying locally!
