Garage Storage Cage Break Ins - What to Do?

Hi all, I am currently renting at the moment and live in one of those apartments with storage cages. The storage cages are locked using a regular padlock and normally the garage entry and exit are gated, and you need a fob to open it.

However, for the past few months the exit gate has been broken and permanently left open which has allowed public access into the garage. We have had a string of break ins into our garage where they have ripped off the flimsy latch from the storage cage and taken my road bike.

I don't have Renter's insurance and am moving soon so not planning on taking it out anytime soon. Other than reporting to the police, can I get the strata to cover my stolen bike's cost?

Thanks.

can I get the strata to cover my stolen bike's cost

    No

  • They advise usually to store it in the apartment for bikes worth more than $500

Just be careful not to go too far by using Lego instead.

Look for a rake deal. Buy many rakes. Lay rakes around cage. Bonus points for security/trail/hidden camera footage of subsequent hilarity.

I have a cage. I lined the inside with carboard so nobody could see what was inside.

I put a large chain and padlock through the part where the door meets the frame on both the hinge and padlock side.

If somebody wants to get in they will do it regardless of those precautions.

      That is a useful suggestion.

After you move, get contents insurance. It’s not a huge expense to potentially save a ton of headache in situations like this. Might also cover you whilst moving.

I was under the impression it doesn’t count for situations like this where it’s in a communal area?

It's does and can. Accidental damage and cover outside of home. Just an example. I have contents insurance snd it covers my bike and laptop etc up to $4500 outside of my house. https://ahm.com.au/explained/contents-insurance-for-renters-…

To add to this, be sure to always check the PDS and compare like-for-like, I've noticed policies can vary a ton between insurers.

  • Can you put it back on the body corp/ rental agent?

No LoL. The only one liable is the thief.
