Planting Alongside French Drain / Drainage Channel. Help Please

Hi all,

Long story short, I had bad drainage along the southern side of a fence. A french drain/drainage channel has been installed underneath the turf to help alleviate some of this issue. The area remains quite wet still, but nowhere near as bad.

Anyway, Id like to plant some plants along the border of the fence (and get rid of the turf) between the fence and the drain.

What kind of plants could I put there that wouldn't cause any damage to the drain, but will also deal with full shade in winter/ full sun in summer?

EDIT: Melbourne based.

What did the qualified French person at your nearest plant nursery suggest when you asked them?

I think you’re getting a lot of gag answers because anything you plant there will encroach on the drain ag-pipe, and will block it over time.
I’m assuming the trench has ag-pipe in a sock cover along it’s length?
If so, it will take a few years for roots to encroach too much, so you can probably plant whatever you like that isn’t going to grow into a monster tree that will fall over when you need to re-excavate the drain in future.

I’d probably choose some fruit trees, but anything that won’t grow over a few meters is probably ok.
