$1748 to Replace a Fan in a Ducted Air Con System. Steep?

We lost our beloved ducted heating/aircon recently, a quick assessment from a local shop identified a burnt out fan in the internal unit (it was not spinning and too hot to the touch after 10s of on time)

The quoted price for the replacement of JUST the fan - no other parts - is $1748. However they've advised this may be a temporary fix and also quoted $10000+ for a few different options to replace the entire inside unit. The cherry on top, we're liable for any other damage the installers cause on the way through.

The fan replacement price seems somewhat high to me, wondering if anyone has had similar work done and what you paid? $10k to replace half the system doesn't quite feel right either, is this a normal cost for using existing ducting etc.? It's an average 3-4br house.

As well as any experience or advice on the above, if anyone has recommendations for Adelaide metro servicers/installers that are reliable, would love to hear about them!

Get an itemised quote and then get socoms and third opinion.

Repairers often just installers in disguise

    • Thanks, yeah we've asked them for a breakdown of the quote. Third opinions en route, but what's a socom?

Agreed, sounds ludicrously expensive for the fan replacement.

I just installed a 10kW ducted system for $11,400 including removal and patching of the old Evaporative system with Glenelg Air and would recommend. Downside was that it took a few weeks from quote to install.

Noting possibly there's additional issues of refrigeration gas compatibility that you might be running into when replacing an old unit with a new one. But I'd still expect a replecement Indoor only unit to come in closer to $5k installed.

    • Thanks! Curious, did they just replace the units or the ducting as well?

        Everything replaced.
Evaporative ducts and vents are too big to re-use and the ideal placement of the vents is different from Refrigerative.

do you have insurance? would it be cover?

Had the same issue with Daikin Unit (external not ceiling unit). My preferred serviceman said straight away new fan motor $350 installed. He did advise the second fan motor usually does same within 12 months. I took his advice and he only charged $330 fitted. First service call since install 2007. Happy camper! I used fault location code to guide him so no need for extra call charge Mostly Air Mt Barker reliable and good!

  • Another thing to consider is installing a few split systems instead. Would be much cheaper to operate.

    • That also gives you some backup. If a unit fails then you still have the others.
I just installed a 2.5KW pana split system for one room. $1K to buy (before july 31) and $1k to install (long pipes and extra power).

  • Really that's quite expensive I must say.

  • Contact Truey's Refrigeration & Air Conditioning for a diagnosis and quote.
My ducted RC system died and some clown quoted thousands to replace the PCB in the outdoor unit after poking around with his multimeter for 2 minutes.
I got Truey's in to have a look and they immediately diagnosed a blown fuse in the outdoor unit. They replaced the fuse on the spot for half the cost of the clown's call out fee.
