Same price as the Hynix P41 was yesterday.

However, now the 2TB Samsung 990 Pro is on sale.

I think the 4TB version of this one (the SN850x) is good value in PCIE4, note that there are cheaper PCIW3 cards on sale for 4TB, and the 4TB version of the T700 is dropping in price for PCIE5.

  • Great price, should have waited for this before pulling the trigger for 980 Pro.

    • Yep. This is the better choice over the Samsung drives

      • So this is much better than Samsung 980 PRO M.2 PCIe 4.0 deal from yesterday?

        • I think so. I don’t like how Samsung handled their dying drives issue but at least there’s firmware for it now

          https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-980-pro-ssd-failur…

I have a 970 Pro in an older computer so I’ve got no skin the game here. I went with WD for my latest build (2TB for OS and 4TB for photography) because of how it performs in reviews and how Samsung dropped the ball with their dying drives

Edit : only downside to the WD drives is lack of hardware encryption

          • @beatsntoons: SN850X also has a glitch in firmware. It's just not a cell level issue. Firmware upgrade is also recommended. Also, NAND technology wise, SN850X is still using 112L NAND chips it seem.

            • @netsurfer: Thanks. I’ll update the firmware on both today

              • @beatsntoons: Noob question: Is firmware updated via Windows settings, or separate download from device website?

                  @Ranagade: Use their software here:
                  https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/10346
Select the first one (internal HDD/SSD)

It will install Dashboard, and you can update the firmware that way.

My 4TB was fine. The 2TB needed an update, and it took about 2 seconds to do.

edit: strangely my WD 4TB drive has 3.63TB (free) expected but my Teams MP34 TB drive has 3.72TB… wonder why there's a difference.

  • Is the heatsink necessary? And is it better than the 990 Pro? I'm seeing comparable read/write speeds but the 990 Pro atm is a bit more expensive.

If you do have the ability to run PCIe gen 4 flagship SSDs at its limit for a long period of time, especially writes, then a heatsink would be good.

990 Pro has better random read, especially at low queue depth (i.e. QD1). 850X has better random write. Since 990 Pro does better in most benchmarks, it has a higher price tag. Tech wise, both SSDs have latest PCIe gen 4 controller, but from a NAND perspective, Samsung has saved its latest gen NAND for PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs (likewise for WD, but officially WD and Toshiba have not made any announcement on NAND for PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs).

For both SSDs, firmware upgrades recommended (though latest batches may already have updated firmware).

  • This or the P41 for the same price?

    • No longer on discount. $296 now.

      • +1

I've ordered the P41 but can still cancel it.

  • This or the KC3000 for $196? To replace 128GB SSD in Windows gaming handheld.
