Wise or Revolut or Both - for Subs

I’d like to jump on the bandwagon heading overseas to various far-flung countries (Türkiye, Argentina, Phillipines, et al) and sign up for some subs while visiting. It seems a popular way to do this is using virtual cards like Wise or Revolut.

Now, call me a Luddite if you like, but I’m a tad old-skool and haven’t got one of these yet so I’m wondering what experiences folks around here have had with them. Is one any better than the other? Should I get both? Are there better alternatives?

I did search the forums and found a thread where someone was asking about using one for travelling, but I’ve already got other cards for that purpose. In my case it would be only for subs and other low-value purchases.

I started looking at Revolut and it started asking me for identification so I backed out

Have been with Revolut for almost 4 years since I moved overseas and my main issue with them is I get emails from them every 3 months telling me they have changed their fees or T&Cs or withdrawal limits or such. That said their virtual cards work well.

Revolut is great, because you can create a disposable card for a specific purpose (i.e. signing up to a free trial), and then cancel it after (or make sure you have no funds) so you don't get charged afterwards…

    • Interesting reading but as far as I know the bank won't cancel the card as long as there is a subscription (or an ongoing debt payment).
This is what happened to me 3 times with Commbank or is it different with Revolut?

No, Revolut is designed for that. It's an actual feature designed from the ground up to be a one-time use card for temporary subscription services. They don't follow the same rules as a normal bank account, in this sense.

It's an interesting feature and I wonder if 100% of online payment systems accept this card.
Update, I can see that their cards are backed by Visa so they should be accepted everywhere without discrimination.

@billadm: I have heard that a few companies have blocked them from working. Uber Eats, I believe, is one of them.

          • @billadm: Revolut has two types of virtual cards: Single use ones (that automatically expire once you purchase something with them) and multi use ones (you decide when to cancel them). Now some merchants don't accept the former, but I haven't seen any that doesn't accept the latter. This is not an issue because you can manually cancel the card yourself.

  • Does anyone have a wise refferal code to avoid the $10 card fee?

    • if you allow dms in your settings, i can dm you my link

  • Wish there were more options than these

  • Some people say that Revolut is great because you sign in something, pay and quit the card but then someone else said that now Revolut requires a real photo in order to sign up so does that mean that you use the card just once?

  • There is a cashback 1% if you use revolut overseas, anyone know what is the max cash back? If there is no capped, i can pay my hotel with this in hong kong

    • Hotel booking with booking.com is 12% cashback with CR.
