Keeping the Gundam deals rolling from Amazon JP. I was looking for a kit of the original Gundam at Odaiba in Japan and found this one on sale (I'm not sure if it's actually the one that was on display before the current Unicorn but I'm sure an expert is going to correct me if I'm wrong; I still bought this kit to add to my growing collection though :D).

It's a Real Grade kit (more complex and comes with more fiddly parts) so it'll keep you entertained for longer if you've already gotten quick as assembling the lower level High Grade kits.

  • Ordered, cheers OP!

Just assembled the RG Unicorn today and had a blast, more enjoyable than HG imo (albeit takes much more time to complete). I have two MG sets on the way, I'm keen to see how different it is to assemble them.

    • Hope you get to Perfect Grade!

    • May I see how you are displaying these models at home?

Really enjoying seeing the recent love for Gunpla. For those unaware of the mobile suits, they're all pretty cool and fun to build but my personal faves:

(These are all 1/100 MG models)

RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.3.0 - Quintessential blue, red, yellow and white Gundam model most people are familiar with.
Buster Gundam - Artillery type unit with a long range cannon.
Freedom Gundam Ver.2.0 - Winged Gundam with various equipment including a Darth Maul style beam saber.
Gundam Dynames - Sniper rifle equipped Gundam with a full body shield.
Astray Blue Frame D - Gundam with wings where the "feathers" can be used as bladed weapons.
RX-93 Nu Gundam Ver.Ka - My personal all time fave. Asymmetrical wing design that become fin funnel weapons. (I think there's a newer version but I prefer the older white and black one).

    • I hope you don't mind me asking, as I bought this as my first kit. I liked how it said "no glue, no paint and no tools" - but watching some youtubes, you really need a sidecutter? But Tamiya ones like this:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Tamiya-Sharp-Pointed-Cutter-74035/…

is expensive, almost as much as the kit itself.

Can I just get a cheapo one from aliexpress like this?

I own the Tamiya one you linked lol but it's definitely not necessary.
I'm unfamiliar with the AliExpress one you've linked so can't say if it'll be any good.

The main things you're looking for is something super sharp that will hold an edge and you want it to be able to cut as flat/flush to the part as possible.

I recommend when cutting it off the sprue to cut off all the parts for the current section you're building but to leave a little nub, this way you can cut the pieces off without having to worry about making a clean cut. After you have the parts you can be more precise but feel free to do what you're most comfortable with.

  • Ordered for my shop, see if they work

  • When I was in Japan in 2018 I picked up this MG kit Bandai Hobby MG Wing Gundam Proto Zero (EW) Gundam Wing: Endless Walt https://amzn.asia/d/7x3wOuf

And have to say it was such a blast to build. Complex enough to not make you pull your hair but fun enough to do it with a couple of days free. Many small parts in MG.
I wanted to get the PG wing zero but 1/60 is just too big

I bought that one for a mate.

Bandai have really refined the process over the decades. Some of the PG 1/60 kits have some amazing complexity (articulating metal skeleton frames, etc) and the process of building is only slightly different to putting together a HG 1/144.

    • I placed an order for RG unicorn Banshee $46 on Amazon few days ago. I am going to Japan in September. Do you think it is cheaper to get it in Japan?

  • I thought in thumbnail it was using a Dyson stick vac :)

    • Yeah even Gundam has to do housekeeping.

  • https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B08VXCYTYG/ much cheaper to get in Japan 2565 yen

    • Does an Australian prime membership translate to AmazonJPN as well?

  • Just a heads up this kit is designed in 2010, and is quite prone to "Early Real Grade Syndrome" (google it), the inner frame is too weak and the entire model becomes loose after a while, to the point it can no longer stand straight.
