My mate Barry O'Farrell just bought a dozen

Gladys and her mate bought more

Hey I bought one last week and the top label has just fallen off. It now reads Jacobs Creek Shiraz 2023. And I know the exact time it fell off because I have a new folex.

  • +1

    cheap, bought 5 x 6 pack

    • +6

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much money on a 6 pack of wine because I can't afford it but if I could, I would.

It's a great price for Penfolds Grange and there are people who can afford to buy and do buy it.

We don't dictate the market. We just follow it.

      Cheers.

With that salty attitude, it doesn't sound like you could even afford the 50ml.

    • penfold promote tasting …. dan murphys burwood has one coming up for $20 and it includes 5 other wines including 389 …. no need to dream …. last years promo tastings were great for $20 ….. included yattarna and the 389 ….

compared to wines like margaux and rothscild and petrus which are $1500+_, for $695 the 2018 on the world stage is a bargain, expensive for australia, cheap for europe and asia …….grange isn't penfolds most expensive wine …….

  • So there's no discount for a 6 pack?

Not that i was looking at purchasing 1 let alone 6 of them

  • Use discount code: GRANGE

    • the discount code didn't work

      • Works only for the 6pack.
        Cheers

  • $695 per bottle!? Crazy.

    • +1

Even cheaper with discount code: GRANGE

      • +2

Sorry, I meant crazy as in crazy expensive, even with discount :O. What makes this wine so good it sells for $700ea ?

        • +1

It sells for much more than $700.
          This is a special price.
Yes it's expensive but experts and the market say it's worth it.

          • @Skye Cellars: Any chance of buying your merlo in a single bottle to try it? Don5 really want a dozen if it’s junk.

            • +1

@furiousgeorge: We are a wholesaler and because of that LEGALLY we can't sell less than 4.5 litres of alcohol per transaction.
That's why we aren't even selling Grange as a single bottle and that would be easier to sell as not everyone wants 6 bottles of Grange.
Also we don't sell junk. That's why all the wines that we sell (except mixed-packs because each bottle may have a different cost) come with free returns.
And most importantly which Merlot are you talking about?
              Cheers

          • @Skye Cellars: You mean like this?

            https://winecompanion.com.au/wineries/victoria/rutherglen/mo…

It's hard not to be cynical when stuff like this happens.

            • @bjt: I have no idea what you mean or what you are talking about. Sorry.

        • +3

Rarity and prestige. It’s also a collectors item, used to be Grange would go up in value as it became rarer (now it’s too overpriced for that). But it’s like the high end of any market, huge diminishing returns.

I’ve tried Grange and it’s a really nice wine, but to me it was just a better version of the 389 at 5 times the price. And that’s all it is, the pick the premium grapes and barrels and use the best for Grange (with a bit more aging). If you were a regular drinking of the 389 it would make sense to have a bottle of grange at least once to give it a whirl. Or if you have money to burn and simply want to look rich in front of friends.

          • +2

@freefall101: 389 was great when it was under $50 a bottle too.

          • @freefall101: if you work for a global company and your expenses are processed in Singapore or Europe, you can probably expense it, I've need paid for a bottle but it used be lunch wine when entertaining clients with the account manager present.

  • time to stock up

  • +5

Perfect with a bowl of indomie

  • Can I make mulled wine with this? Or may be some sangria

    • +12

If you buy it, you can do whatever you want with it.

  • +1

    Good in bolognaise

    • +4

I have a suspicion that you are assuming here…

      • Yes, time for @cashless to post a video.

  • Hey there, how have these been stored please?

    • +1

      Temperature controlled warehouse.

  • Now that’s a bargain I was waiting for to spend my remaining money after the interest rate hikes

    • +6

I think you should keep your money.
Don't get me wrong, I would like to sell you some but I think it's better for you if you don't buy any.
      Cheers.

  • there is nothing wrong with a wine selling for this price

and this may well be a good buy in some's eye

but dont get upset if you see sour comments too, because this is afterall a bargain website….

    • Not upset at all.

  • Australia Post will probably smash it while in transit

    • This actually happened last time

  • +2

We should be proud that Australia produce some great wine in the world stage. Others like Chateau Mouton or Lafite goes way more and they goes like hot cakes. Just isn't something for everyone.

I think this one usually goes at the 800+ mark (more like 900). So it's a good deal for those who can afford it

    • +1

whoever can afford it, I don't think needs much of a deal to buy it

      • lots of people can afford it …… if you own a couple of rentals and up the rent the tenants pay for it ….. this is not targetted at people who rent or who have a mortgage …..

    • +1

I'm not at all proud of our booze industry, it's all marketing. The good wineries are the small ones, it's exactly as depicted in the movie "sideways" where he drinks from the spittoon. What was happening in California back then has happened here.

      • It is a different market, collector vs consumer. Many Mouton, Lafite and Grange end up in a wine cellar for years, some may never get open. You need to have certain element to get in this market and Penfold is one of those company who has the resources to achieve this.

Our wineries are great but their strength is at the consumer market. It not worth for them to even try to get into the collector's market as it is not their core strength.

  • Halliday doesn't review anymore or not 100?

Edit - looks like 95 from Halliday in case anyone cares for a view from a person that isn't a total sell out.

  • Great wine with awesome price. Bought 12!

      Seriously?

      • Why the downvotes??

  • Hi Skye Cellars, any discount memberships or freebies for returning customers please?
    Cheers
