wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy several pieces of treated hardwood + bolts from bunnings? depends on how big a garden bed you want i suppose.

    • I don't know of any science either way but have read suggestions that it's not a great idea to use treated timber for vege gardens as the chemicals could leach out into the soil/plants. That said recycled or even new corrugated plus some thinking might work out well.

    • yes, you are right. use untreated hardwood then

That was CCA treated timber which was discontinued some time ago. It can be solved by lining frame with black plastic (same place that sells the sleepers). Green leafy plants like lettuce are the worst at soaking up the arsenic (the "A" in CCA). Mind you, I can't imagine all this chinese food we're eating now is much better than growing your own WITH the arsenic-soaked timber.

    • Better still use ACQ treated pine sleepers.
They do cost a little more (15%?) but are safe for veggie gardens and kids playgrounds.
      No arsenic. Alkaline Copper Quaternary.

CCA has not been discontinued. It was simply disallowed for use in children's play equipment.
