I'd be worried if they were calling themselves Phillips…
Pretty sure there's no such thing as an "LED" TV, only LCD or OLED.
Technically, both LCD TVs and LED TVs are actually liquid crystal displays. The same basic technology is used in both televisions. The main difference between the two is that LCD TVs use fluorescent lights (CCFL) for backlighting, while LED TVs use the newer technology LEDs.
Not true, LCD TVs can use CCFL or LED backlighting.
Perhaps but point is, its called out its LED as it uses LEDs. Its not called LCD TV using LEDs. LCD TVs were phased out long time ago, 8-9 years and LED TVs came in. Average consumer only knows that so why confuse them calling the TV LCD TV using LED technology?
@Omarko: You ask why confuse them, I ask why mislead them? It'd be like if you had a radio with a digital (LCD) tuner, and you called it a digital radio, that'd be wrong. When digital tuners were first introduced in car radios in the 80s, they didn't call them "digital radios". Yet there was no confusion with consumers.
Led refers to the back lighting, you also have the newer mini led, and the older compact fluorescent.
I know that. But a TV with LED backlighting is not an "LED TV". Think back to the Playstation 2 - at the time, it was claimed to be "128-bit" but that just referred to the CPU word size, obviously there is no such thing as a 128-bit CPU. Just like there's no such thing as an LED TV, only LED backlighting.
Haha you're thinking waaaay too much into it my friend 😂
My Philips plasma tv is still going strong after 12 years. I'd probably grab one of these if it stopped working.
Until 2012, Philips TVs were produced by the Philips TV company. In 2012, the Philips brand was licensed for production by third-party companies. Philips got rid of the television business. Philips now has nothing to do with Philips TVs. To be precise, the TP Vision joint venture was first created with TPV Technology at 70% and Philips at 30% as founders. In 2014, Philips sold its stake to TPV.
Oh I didn't know that! So a future purchase to avoid it sounds like
Yup , the old Phillips TVs were amazing quality ( I am talking about their Plasmas with Ambilight), Back in the 2000s. Shame they stopped.
Philips TVs are still a tier above the standard cheapos
You have your regular budget types you see at BIGW, JB, Harveys or GGs:
- Soniq, Hisense, TCL, AKAI etc etc
Top tier brands:
- Samsung, LG, SONY etc
Philips TVs are right between those tiers. The menu and UI will usually be crisp and precise, while lacking in the polish the big boys add to their UIs. All the cheap ones have laggy and/or buggy interface but that's why they're cheap.
Philips TVs are still great when bought at budget prices. I got the 4K 50inch Ambilight one on special today for $599.00.
Ambilight or go home.
Pretty expensive for a generic tv with the Phillips badge
