Purchased! Almost bought a 980 pro but was waiting for the prime day deals to see if it dropped below $100.
For the extra $12 over the current 980 price, this is a good upgrade from the 980 pro. I think from what I've read its about a 2GB/s upgrade. If it goes cheaper, I can always return it I suppose….. or just buy another one :)

The last 5 words is where it's at!!

    • Change of mind return is no longer free for Amazon International, you will need to pay for the return label ($24). So, it will most likely be just buy another one.

    • Should I cancel the 980 order other day deal?

        • its in the works for a while but no release date yet.

        • I'm from the future and waiting for 32 Petabyte model

          • @spaiydz: so when can we expect the 4tb version?

      • @jianh - I believe you are correct. You could expect a 2TB model, but a 4TB model unlikely at this point….In my case, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

They are great units though. I have used them and have upgraded from the 960 series since. My last unit was the 980 2TB model with the heatsink They do run hot when given a hammering, however they are stable and haven't had any throttling issues to date.

  • Worth getting this as a reliable boot drive after the recent samsung ssd firmware issues?

    https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-refusing-to-acknowledge-…

  • Any chance we will have M2 of more than 4 TB in future ? like 8tb 12tb

  • +1

understand Samsung is a giant player on SSD market, but based on my very limited memory, Samsung had quite a few times of issues, regardless hardware or firmware level.

Anyone had any of those issues caused data loss at all? or those issues are kind of only happening during extreme testing situation? the price and listed performance are so tempting…

    • I work in an office.. We have a mix of Samsung, Intel, Crucial and Sandisk (Now named WD) SSD's in our laptops and desktops

Over the past 6 years … 2 Samsung's have died. 1 intel has died… But no Crucial or San disk

Now we are only talking about 40 SSD's but the standard rule of always backpacking up your data regardless of what storage drive you use is a must.

If you want a reliable drive… DONT get one like this that runs hot and maxes out the nand storage chips.. get a slow speed cool running mid range drive

I would say a 980 Pro is more reliable going by the rocky start to the life of the 990 Pro

  • Thanks! I was literally starting the hunt today for 2x new OS drives for my server (RAID1) today, so this was perfect timing. I grabbed 2 of these for $218.29 delivered which works out to $109.15 a piece. These are currently going for ~$190 at the usual staticice retailers so a huge saving here. I have a 2TB 990 Pro in my laptop already and has run flawlessly so far, no hesitation getting this model again.

    • What OS are you running? I bought 2x 980 1TB for VM Drives as a mirror, planning to use a Sata SSD as boot. I don't know of many systems that can use a drive as storage and boot.

  • Price dropped. its now $116.54

  • After benching my current MX500 SSD and seeing it only manages 510~Mb/s read speeds I'm now keen on a 990 pro as a dedicated game drive for my PC. Can't believe how fast these things are I need to see it for myself!

  • So they're up to 990 now, what will the next model be called?
