AntiVirus for Apple Macs Advice?

Was just after an update on this topic. I have a mate who just bought a new Apple laptop and was asking me about AV software. I told him not to be 'too' concerned but I'd look into it for him. What is the current state of play, Apples need AV or not?

Thanks

Wouldn't bother myself - macOS can take care of itself if you just stick with the default security/encryption/signing configuration

Been a Mac user since the mid 90s - never used anti-virus software.

Used a Mac since the Powermac, never had a virus.

Macs don’t get virus. Virus get Macs.

  • Just install ublock origin in your browser and you should be good to go

Hmm, I'm guessing no one saw this?

I think you need to explain yourself a bit there because if you were familiar with Macs and understood what you were reading you probably wouldn't have bothered posting that.

b-t Googles "Confirmation bias doesn't exist" and reads the first result

  • There's a bunch of safeguards built in to modern macOS (XProtect/YARA/SIP/etc). The most likely vector for compromise is the user being tricked in to doing something silly like disabling these safe guards and explicitly downloading and running malicious software. If they install software updates as they come up and don't pirate software or the like they'll be fine.
