any Volkswagen Audi Group car turns into a mechanical turd after 10 years
Of those first 10 years it'll be subject to a fair few mechanical issues as well.

Honestly in this day and age, with the quality and fitment of most Korean, Japanese and even Chinese cars there's no reason to buy a euro VW with maintenance costs that resemble that of a Porsche/Audi.

But hey, some people are masochists.

    • Anything from the VW group you would not touch with a barge pole.

Skoda might be worth a try when they had the 7/7/7 promotion - 7 year wty and servicing included. would not touch VW proper, we'll see what the new Cupra offers

        • -1

Agree, at least with skoda they're trying to look after you, even if it is the same VW product.

    • +3

Not sure why the negs, I know a couple of people who have had these problems.

      • +5

Probably VAG fanboiz who think their unreliable turd engine lights are the industry norm

Nah one was a good guy who just wanted a nice car, was a nice car too for a couple of years then something went wrong with the engine that was going to cost 6K to fix with no guarantee that the other side wouldn't go out as well. Yeah the other guy is European so like European cars regardless of the arguments against.

My last VW had shitbox dsg issues at the 2 year mark but one of my mates had a manual turbo diesel 2004 polo that he sold in 2020 with 250,000km and the only issue he had was blown turbo at about 150,000km. So yeah YMMV.

      • +1

Agree that the DSG was the source of a fair few issues. A blown turbo at 150,000k's i'd deem as a pretty serious failure.

        • It was actually a somewhat common issue on that high power version of the TDI, I know someone that sells turbo's and he saw a lot of that specific version over the years.

    • So what might you recommend as an alt to the VW Caddy. I was considering it as a microcamper since it is so good on fuel usage (apparently?)
There the transit connect, but can't get a lock on fuel. Then there's repairs, etc….

      • Peugeot Partner or Expert. Really nice vans, up there with Mercedes vans for overall quality and drive.

        • I can't find a van that beats real world reports of the caddy for fuel economy…
Next might be the Renault Kangoo.

Look for a better car, it’s a horrible car to drive

Get a Peugeot 2008 instead. Much nicer car with more power for only a little bit more money. Also the Pug has a better and more reliable traditional auto rather than the VW DSG

    • Agreed. 2008 is a beautiful car and nicer in every way.

      • I feel that a little SUV should be fun, colourful and little bit cool/cheeky looking, the 2008 is that. The T-cross seems a little bit too serious and humourless.

    Chuck another 10k for repairs

I looked at the T Cross but ended up with the Skoda Kamiq Signature - simply a brilliant small SUV. My package deal included the 7 year warranty and 7 years servicing.
After 7 months and 7000km it's averaged 5.9 litres per 100km driving mainly around Sydney. One Goulburn to Sydney trip averaged 4.7 l/100km cruising at 113km/h on the freeway.
Plenty of power with the 1.5 litre turbo charged motor when required.
The plan is to sell the Kamiq before the 7 years is up. So far, zero issues with the car ….. :-)

Looking forward to your post when DSG carks it (approx. 1 day after end of manufacturer warranty)

DSG's are a dead technology. Torque converter automatics have improved so much now

    • save the headache and Buy a Yaris Cross instead

    $40,000 for a poxy 1.0L 3-cylinder 85kW?

but but it'll have R stickers on it!

This car is currently sat in my garage as a loan while I get my car serviced.

Very bland and sad car for the money. My 7 year old golf has more character, features and power than this T Crap. Very underwhelmed. Steering is heavy. Centre console is barer than a desert. Drive quality is so so. Driver aids are a pita. Not liking it much.

    • Further Thoughts

      No Auto hold
Analog e brake, so I kept forgetting to engage and disengage it (the golf has made me lazy)
      Steering feels heavy
      Good turning radius
Steering controls and ceiling light buttons look athe same as my 2015 golf. I would have expected some change by 2023.

    1. Always buy through a broker.

When I bought my level 2 Subaru Forester 4 years ago it was 13% cheaper through a broker than best price I could get.

When a friend of mine bought a top of the line S F 3 months ago through a broker, delivered in 1 week after order placed after waiting 18 months for a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to be delivered, even in these supply constrained times, the broker got it for 9% less.

When we went to pick it up my friend asked the salesman why he wouldn't sell it to him at the same price as the broker price, the salesman said "You buy one car every 5+ years. The broker buys 100s of cars every week. We give them a good deal so they keep coming to us."

    1. Watch John Cadogan videos on YouTube on why you shouldn't buy a VW, or a range of other brands, because of the xxxx - I'm not getting sued for defamation.

    Especially, not a Honda.

    • Don't blame me for point 1 appearing twice. The OB text editor did that all by itself.

    • Could you suggest a broker please?

    • +2

Honda are fine, it is their business model that sucks.Cars are ultra reliable, exceptionally well built.

  • We went with the broker that John Cadogan recommends. It was called Georgie at the time but it has rebranded as OnlineAuto.com.au.

My friend went with the one that was on JC's website but I dont know if it is still the same company we went through.

thanks all for sharing your views.. i'm now considering alternatives and also for suggesting a broker. Cheers!

  • Don't know why all these negs on VAG. I've had my Audi A3 for 9 years and it ran mostly fine. Just some minor stuff here and there but nothing major.

And service wise, much better than dealerships of other European brands.
