Seller Claims I Didn't Pay Full Amount (Facebook Marketplace)

Turned up, inspected item, gave the seller the money (had offered more than they originally were asking for - popular item). Handed over what i thought was the right amount of money. The seller helped unpack the item so says they didnt count the money which is possible

They were apparently the housekeeper, selling the item for owner of the house.

Now after get home getting messages that i didnt pay the full amount and that their boss will be "super angry" and they will have to pay out of their pocket. I was already paying $100 more than what was originally asked for by the housekeeper/seller.

Asked them to sign a statutory declaration that they only received $300 and I will transfer the $50 they say i owe. They've now said it's too much effort.

Have i done the right thing?

They've decided signing a piece of paper isn't worth $50 to them, end of matter. (No, you haven't done the wrong thing).

Their fault for not checking if it was the correct amount before handing over the goods.

    • +4

Yep. When Buying, I always count it out for for them so this doesn't happen.

Too busy huffing Lemon Pledge..you buy.

    • +1

      …no…. baby mine

  • +4

Buyer beware. They were buying your money and apparently were too nervous to count it in front of you.

  • +1

Personally I'd notice if I had $50 more than I should have, but then besides when I have something specific to buy with cash I think I've had the same $20 in my wallet since 2020.

You're under no obligation to do anything. If they don't want to sign a stat dec then there's a good chance they lost the $50 themselves (or pocketed it).

  • @Azif you've done more than enough, id say you did more than expected by even offering to pay more for the exchange of a stat dec. They should of counted the money on the spot anyway.

    The housekeeper kept it

I mean, it's as plain as Schwarzenegger's son by his former housekeeper that no-one in the fam realised until years later.

      so actually a moneykeeper
      .

that their boss will be "super angry"

    Oh no!

    Anyway.

maybe they took out some notes before handing it to the owner :)

It would also be interesting to know whether the seller actually received this additional $100…

Or if the owner knew of the sale at all!

        OP's next post:

Purchased item on FBM from housekeeper. Actual owner has contacted me saying goods are stolen and wants it back. WDID?

FBM buyer offering over ask as if….

    did you give 3 x $100 of 15 bags of $1 coins?

  • +4

Rookie mistake. You always count cash. Anywhere. Whether it's overseas at the exchange place (why would you go to an exchange place tho) or gumtree/fb

    • +1

      Rookie on the “housekeeper” right?

Can't wait for episode two, gotta love these drama shows.

  • +2

    Do nothing.

    The transaction has been done.

  • +1

How convenient for them to tell owner "they didn't pay enough"….what a load of BS!

  • +5

You didn't pay enough. Just give me the $100 and I'll drop it over to them.

  • -3

    You should pay another 100

  • +3

Rookie error - Always make people count the cash in front of you. It tends to prevent this sort of stuff happening…

  • +1

Imo, always deal with the owner. Receipt could have helped. When multiple people start being involved it's sketchy. In the rush to get items, ppl ignored precautions (have done it myself). Weirdest one was picking up a $25 macbook air and this housekeeper lady appears from the side of a townhouse and starts cleaning the driveway near my car. Pretty sure no bugs were planted lol, but probably should park in a public spot. People also size you up and take advantage sometimes eg: there is no "boss" and paying $100 extra made them more greedy.

Sellers on FB Marketplace are now pretending to be the 'help' ?? I'm sending my 'butler' to pay & collect my next purchase !

      Bugs??? WTF???

What kind of James Bond world do you imagine you live in?

How does your brain work that you would even conceive that a 'housekeeper lady' would plant a tracking/listening device on your car, when you were just visiting for a $25 transaction?

      • +1

"Pretty sure no bugs were planted lol" lol indicating a joke. Comes from another "advice" that says always park your car where you can see it. The way this was set up, once you go into the townhouse, you can't see your car. So that woman was near my car for at least twenty minutes. Seems weird that the other side of the townhouse decided to sweep the driveway exactly as I drove in. (Don't think she was a housekeeper). As to what "james bond" world I am from: I am from South Africa.

        • Fair enough.

But the "Pretty sure no bugs were planted lol" comment just came out of nowhere - because "Comes from anooher "advice" that says always park your car where you can see it." has no context in this thread. You may recall it from another thread, but I'm sorry I don't.

And hence you can probably see where I am thinking: "Where did that come from?" So far out of left field that I made the smartarse comments!

I am still absolutely mystified by the idea of someone bugging/tracking someone's car. (Unless one is involved in organised crimial activity, espionage, etc.) I think I recall Walt doing it in Breaking Bad. Maybe some people think that was a documentary, or do-it-yourself guide to life?

So hard counting to 7, opps 6. Their mistake.

  • +2

You did the right thing by making it harder for them to continue their lie.

Its marketplace. Who cares. Its not like anyone cares about feedback on there. The amount of time wasters and tyre kickers is mind boggling. I mean if they actually had some kinfd of meaningful feedback and ratings system then maybe, but you did what you were there to do. They didnt count, its on them, move on.

  • Just curious what was the item(like something antique)?

  • +1

So you're one of those people offering more than listed price and ruining the Market Place for everyone 👍🏼 Well done.

    • You mean tyre kickers can't con people anymore? Shame.

      • If a person lists an item for $$$ and I offer to pay $$$, I am driving to them and they message me, oh sorry Azif offerred me $$$$ so don't bother coming…

How am I the tyre kicker in this scenario?

  • If they want to play games, tell them you didn't receive the item.

  • Asked them to sign a statutory declaration that they only received $300 and I will transfer the $50 they say i owe.

Help me understand, how would this piece of paper would do anything? I am assuming housekeeper could just spend the extra amount he got and still could sign the declaration. Who's going to check that?

  • +1

    lol

Paying more than asking price on Facebook Marketplace? Username checks out.

  • They were apparently the housekeeper, selling the item for owner of the house.

First, who the hell has a housekeeper?

And if you are landed gentrified enough to actually have a housekeeper, why are you selling stuff on Facebook? Seriously?

And if you really are a cheapo toff, why are you getting the help to sell your stuff?

And if you are the oppressed housekeeper (terrified by their super angry boss), why not perform the most basic diligence of checking how much dosh was exchanged?

    • +1

I do. I also call her wife though and mother to my children.

  • They must have been hit with a tonne of messages after the sale and realised it's worth more than what you paid (inc the extra). And now want to recoup it somehow.

What was the item? Out of curiosity?

  • +1

I've learned this the hard way, had a tradie come in and do a cashie for some work worth $600ish he came in and did half the job but had some emergency and had to go home(wife was pregnant), he promised he will come back and left all his tools at mine, requested if I can pay him something, seemed like a genuine guy so I paid him whole $600, he didn't count the money and rang me after few hours saying I only gave him 6x$50 notes and not $600.

Asked him to check his pockets/car etc as I do recall counting the money a few times, ended up giving him another $300 but from then on whenever dealing with cash either receiving or giving I always make sure I get the other person to count it and I count it as well in front of them.
