  • this or a m2 mac pro?

Depends on your use case. It really isn't that simple.

    • This!

    • +4

It comes down to your use case.

Apart from the OS, the key difference is that the Yoga can have tablet functionality if you buy the touchscreen.

Overall, the Yoga has better specs for the price (CPU, GPU, 32GB/1TB > 8gb/512GB at the same price level, 3072x1920 IPS 100% P3 > 2560x1600 IPS 100% P3) but the M2 is more power efficient. None of that matters if it doesn't work with what you're doing.

    • +5

You are comparing two different TDPs. The 13905h has a max TDP of 115w. M2 Pro only has a TDP of around 30w. People saying this without deal without any proof unfortunately are giving you the wrong information.

      https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/232172/…

Reviews indicate that it is much higher compared to Intel's claims. In a 14" chassis it's going to throttle because the cooling won't be able to keep up. The M2 will have better performance when unplugged and significantly better battery life due to having much lower TDP. With such a high TDP the battery is not going to give you much mileage in this laptop.Unfortunately Intel 12 and 13th gen processors have very bad performance per watt due to being on an inferior manufacturing node compared to Apple and AMD.

  • Do you get cashback on edu store?

    • No

  • I wonder if the mobile 4060 is on par with the desktop this gen, given how much of a downgrade it was.

      • We haven't had desktop/mobile GPU's this close to parity since the Pascal 10-series, unfortunately it's not for the same reasons.

        • +1

3060 laptop was sometimes faster than 3060 desktop, so it has happened before :)

      • +1

Haven't seen benchmarks, but it looks like the same situation as the rest of the lineup - you're one die class down (AD107 vs AD106). 11 TFLOPS vs 19 TFLOPS (yes I know TF is a useless metric, but when comparing dies of the same manufacturer and generation they can give an idea of the ranking), you're down 20% on shader cores and 10% on boost frequency (probably more at 80W), so I would expect 60-70% of the desktop 4060? I'm obviously guessing, so grab your bath salts and relax :)

    • mobile 4060 is 140W on some Gaming laptop. on yoga 16'' it's 100w and on yoga 14'' it's 80w

      • +1

The one thing this gen isn't terrible at is efficiency, -40% wattage isn't as bad as -40% performance.

        • +2

agree, 100w-110w seems to be the best point for 4050 and 4060 from some reviews

  • +1

Last month, I purchased the Yoga Pro 9i 16' with the same specifications (i9+4060+nontouch screen).
The laptop is truly a work of art, boasting excellent design, a sharp screen, great speakers, and a powerful GPU (14' 80w & 16' 100w) with effective cooling.

However, after only 10 days, the display stopped working, and I had to request a refund.
Lenovo's after-sales service is also excellent, and I have already received the refund.

    • These are usually very sturdy devices. Strange the display would just shutdown like that.

      • At first I thought it might be the dual GPU issue, I upgraded both Intel&Nvidia GPU driver, but it didn't help.
Online agent asked me to reset the laptop by pressing the reset hole, but I still couldn't enter the BIOS UI, so they suggested to exchange/refund.

    • +2

Well that sucks lol. For what its worth price here includes 3 year onsite support/warranty and I'd be pretty confident with that.

      • I bought 3Year Onsite support with $94.00 and 3Year Sealed Battery Add On with $24.00. They are also refunded.

        • 3Year Sealed Battery Add On

is this extended warranty or some kind of upgrade to the battery

          • +1

            @dcep: extend warranty.

I want to believe you but any review that says "boasting" sounds sponsored as hell lmao

It's like scam emails that request you to "kindly" share your email and password

You miss my point, I believe that you purchased the laptop but the original comment does not use language of a regular consumer, it's more like a product description provided by the manufacturer or a tech website review that mimics such a description.

Your English is fine, sorry if my comment came off as abrupt as I did not intend it that way. It was more a lighthearted sarcastic comment.

Not sure why I have been negged for my original comment, "boasting" is objectively a strange word to use if someone is unoffiliated with the product and writing a comment on a discussion forum.

    • How was the screen quality/brightness?

      • +1

Particularly good for me, you can switch refresh rate between 60hz and165hz by pressing FN+R
it's very smooth when playing cs go

    • Was the battery life miserable given the size of the battery running a 16' display?

      • The battery drops from 100% to 96% when I was playing Cs GO with the original adaptor.

        • +2

What does this even mean 😳

          • @essent1al: when you plug a 140w adaptor to play a game, the battery should not be consumed

            • @EasyZZZ: It's a battery preservation technique to avoid short discharge/charge cycles in order to prolong the overall life of the battery. ie max is set at 96% when plugged in.

              • @CptnObvious: actually, it's not. I got the same result when I disabled the battery preservation in Lenovo Vantage

  • Has anyone seen much info on the mini-LED screen? Trying to Google reviews/reports for the Lenovo and not finding much (could just be terrible at searching).

    • +1

The ShortCircuit review for this on Youtube has the mini-LED screen.

      • Awesome, thanks!

  • Would have a been great if there was a choice of OLED but mini-LED is a great choice for touch whilst someone finally finds a solution to the touch screen grid artifacts (seems unlikely)

Still I would hold out a bit longer. Laptop sales have fallen off a cliff. I expect the mother of all sales during this boxing day.

This laptop will get cooked with those specs and enjoy fans kicking off all the time with the sound of Boeing A380 in your room. Do yourself a favour and get a MacBook Pro and you will never come back to windows powerful laptops ever again or until Intel and AMD will start introducing ARM chips. Oh! you can easily run Windows on MacBook too so problem solved.

    • And what if we don't enjoy MacOS? What if we want to run Linux, and want to develop with containers that run natively rather in a VM? Macs are not for everyone. Glad it works for you!

    • I know you would have to be tolling, but Horses for courses. MBP for video rendering etc. and genera, productivity and full performance on battery which lasts. And would definitely be better build quality than this lenovo. If it wasn’t for a specific software requirement for work, I would get an MBP.

This Lenovo laptop looks like it might be very good for gaming while connected to wall power and general productivity.
I am not sure it would be quite as useful for my purpose, 3D rendering. Don’t get me wrong, it would do very well, it not as well as a dedicated laptop workstation GPU. And I would take a less powerful GPU and screen density for better battery anyway. I have a Lenovo workstation laptop for this very purpose.

But this is a good deal. My laptop is not as tricked out as this laptop and I paid the same sort of money a year ago.

  • +1

This looks weirdly like a price error to me. I'd assume the extras should add on to the base price but they subtract.
I really wish I hadn't upgraded 12 months ago now.

    • it has to be, the i7 16gb is more expensive than i9 32gb

    • +1

in China, the yoga pro 9i 14'' has just one SKU (I9+32G+4060+Touch Screen), the price is ¥11999, roughly 2500 AUD

  • How is battery life?

  • My main concern is heating/fan noise due to the specs. anyone have info on that ?

    • +1

Cooling is pretty good on the 16'', but fan noise is average level

  • I missed the MacBook Pro M1 deal, but that was more expensive.

I'm tempted for that, tho no edu access.

Good laptop deals about lately. I can't complain about my HP deal I got for $750 to be fair.

    Totally different price points.

  • HOw much is the 16" for the same specs PLEASE

    • $2,983.99 with the 4060

      • i9 too?

        • yes

          • @zol: How much for i7 ?

how much for i7 with 4050? thx

            • @ilove: 14" i7 16 gb, 4050 is $3,159. Which is much more expensive

              • @zol: thanks but i 16" … at lowest price with 4050 at least.

  • Which is better? IPS or mini-LED?

    • It is only $200 difference between the touch IPS and the touch mini-led. My guess is, if you want touch it is worth getting the mini-led version.

  • +3

Probably no one else cares, but this is not pen compatible

  • Actually surprised this CPU beats the M1 Pro Max nearly everywhere :/

Is this alot quicker than i5-1240?

    • Well you answered your own question, if the i9 13950H beats M1 Pro Max, then it def beats a lower ultrabook i5 1240.

  • Hope they fix the keyboard drivers by now.

  • +1

Nice find OP, bit the bullet after reading/ watching reviews and benchmarks etc. Found a good review explaining temps, fan noise and benchmarks- although a maxed out 64GB and RTX4070 version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrXUbwnnq80, had a read through the comments as he gives a lot of good feedback other sponsored videos neglect i.e battery life and screen practicality.

    • Thanks

    • Aren't his battery life readings a little optimistic. Another review said it only got 3 hours of general use and 4 with low setting running a video. Battery life doesn't seem much better than a gaming rig.

      • Yeah, I've seen a few differing statements in battery life, all the sponsored videos neglect any talk of battery life. So probably not the best with the available screen.

        Found a practical review on Reddit, R/Lenovo U/askredditsg: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c…

He said 4-6 hours on non-demanding work.

According to Lenovo PC (seems like BS) responding to some youtube comments:

Yoga Pro 9i 16" battery life (same 75wh battery as 14"):
        LCD (UMA):
Video playback up to 12hr @150nits
        MM2018 up to 9hr @200nits
        Battclues up to 7hr @200nits
        LCD (DIS):
Video playback up to 11hr @150nits
        MM2018 up to 7hr @200nits
        Battclues p to 6hr @200nits
        MiniLED:
Video playback up to 9.5hr @150nits
        MM2018 up to 6.4hr @200nits
        Battclues up to 5.5hr @200nits

        Time spy benchmark: Yoga Pro 9i 14" RTX4060: 9941

Also found the Lenovo specs sheet: https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/datasheet/Yoga%20Pr…

IPS battery life (also seems like BS):
        MobileMark® 2018 : Up to 9.2 Hours
Local Video Playback : Up to 13.6 Hours
*All battery life claims are approximate and based on
two methods of testing: MobileMark® 2018 battery
life benchmark @ 200 nits brightness and continuous
1080p video playback @ 150 nits brightness on the
latest update of Windows 10. Actual battery life will
vary and depends on many factors such as product
configuration and usage, software use, wireless
        functionality, power management settings, and
screen brightness. The maximum capacity of the
battery will decrease with time and use.

  • 8% cashback @ Shopback?
    Ends in 1 day.

    • Not eligible for educational store unfortunately.

      • The 16" is $3034 with i9, 32gb and 4060 on the normal store. After 8% cashback it's $2791 which is a decent deal as well.

  • Bear in mind that Intel in their infinite wisdom disabled voltage control for everything other than -HK and -HX and these are 'fake' i9s in the sense that you get slightly better clocks compared to the 13700H and nothing else, so you will have to bear with the loud fans and temps. These run at what? 1.4v out of box? at least the 13900HX is hope these are tuned better.

    Good price nonetheless

  • has there been any documented benchmark testing on any games?

  • Thoughts on how this compares to the Zenbook 14X which admittedly has the 3050 gpu but otherwise similar specs

    • I was thinking of the Zenbook 14x initially, but this seems to be a better deal overall
      Lenovo benefits:
      3 years warranty
      Better GPU
      Faster ram
      Asus:
      Better screen (OLED)

      • What about battery life? Zenbook seems to have it comprehensively beat in that department even with the Oled display.

        • I agree, Zenbook has better battery life compared to this Lenovo one. Zenbook OLED display is much better as well.

  • +1

16" also discounted on normal store

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-pro-series/yoga-pro-9i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/len101y0035

  • Deal expired. It is now selling for $3,193.99 on the Education store.

  • +1

Lenovo realised their pricing error. At the correct price, there are much better options given the review indicate this model has come to market without proper testing.
