Parking Offences. Do You Report Them Personally?

Long story short. Was issued a parking fine of $120 by Maroubra Council when I accidentally parked my car in a police/emergency bay. Was a honest mistake as I was new to the area and mistook the sign for the other lane. Have requested a review hoping for a better outcome

Are you asking if we report parking issues in the wild as citizens? If it doesn't impact me specifically (i.e. my reserved spot) or poses a clear safety hazard to others, then not really my business if someone parks incorrectly or expired ticket or whatever.

    • Aww c'mon be a good snitch, your government needs you!

Yes, entitled housewife in a hurry should deffs be allowed to use disabled parking bay ,without fear of being outed by the good citizens, innit. /s

        • +2

Heh, I saw a clip the other day where some Karen was berating a guy for parking in the disabled bay and after a while he simply took off his fake leg and she shut up then. :)

  • Yes. In my case I think it was reported by someone local than a ranger

    • +2

      What difference does it make?

    • What makes you think that?

      • +2

Because he believes he isn't that unlucky so he likes to take on risks.

        • +2

I don't get the personalisation within various posts where OPs allege that people single them out for whatever reason. As you pointed out above, it doesn't matter whether a local reported it or a ranger did. Signage is straightforward yet thought process moves to random locals mustn't like the cut of OP's jib or something similar.

          • @[Deactivated]: I don't get the entitlement and FIGJAMism of plastering it on a forum . It's like 'look at me' is a form of moral absolution.

    • +10

      It was me.

I did not like the look on your car.

      • +8

        I reported them too.

Hopefully they'll get a second fine come through this week.

    • Uhhh….. if it’s a police/emergency bay… Occam’s razor says the police who tried to use the bay for its intended purpose probably issued the fine.

      • Police don't issue council fines

        • Police only use them to park for the free lunch at Corleones Cafe.

Ignorance is not a defence. Nor is an honest mistake.

Photo of the space? Those zones are typically fairly well indicated

That no parking sign is very ambiguous 😂

      • +5

I can see how you could be confused by that sign.

      • Yeah dunno mate thats a tough one ;/

      • +1

Jesus mate. Just pay the fine.

      • Crap signage, it looks like they tried to save money/effort by not using another sign pole in the correct location for the parking zone

      • lol there is no need to be dobbed in if you take a park reserved for council vehicles.

Do an experiment: try parking there 100 times. I'll bet that you get at least 100 tickets.

It’s $120, could have been worse, coulda got towed

    • +4

I was surprised that the fine isn't higher.

      • -1

They'll probably charge some hidden fee's on next rates bill

  • just get some red and blue lights

    "Do You Report Them Personally?"
    Only when I'm in Maroubra
    .

I would only report someone if they were blocking access like a driveway or footpath and it was causing a problem. If parking is an issue in that area eg never enough available, I can see why someone might make a report.

  • You won’t get a review through.

  • Handicapped spaced, yes.

  • +1

As others have said, only if it poses a risk or has directly impacted me and I can't resolve the problem.
I would never report an expired meter or parking somewhere technically not legal but doesn't impact anyone.

Bad luck op, should have looked more closely at the signage.

  • I’ve looked at the sign and it’s bloody confusing.

Having grew up and went to school in Maroubra, the rangers are crazy there, especially near the junction.

I got stung for a no parking sign in the backstreet near chemist warehouse. Parked in front of another car, the no parking sign was 5m back behind the car I parked in front of on the telegraph pole, nothing on the actual corner. I couldn’t be bothered fighting it.

Yeah I know right - like surely I can "abandon" my car there for a while - just so long as I don't "park" there right.

In my local council, an employee will get a ticket for using a council park for a few minutes whilst unloading some equipment. They won't use a council-reserved park at all, not even for a minute to drop someone off. I don't know anyone who takes their job more seriously than a local laws officer.

      • Agreed, mate. Bondi council took it to the next level though. They invested in cars with license plate readers so they don’t actually have to walk and mark, the car does it all.

  • +3

I'll report it if it's a handicap space or blocking people/traffic in some way.

My personal pet peeve is ass holes who park in the driveways of houses, blocking the footpath for disabled/elderly people. Love to report them.

  • +1

Yes and have, though as other have said, it depends on the circumstances.

Handicapped spaces? Yes! Especially now since my parents and in laws need to make use of those spaces due to severe mobility issues. Even once had someone (non-permit holder) cut us off and steal a handicapped space >:[

Also once found someone parked in the middle of an aisle in a busy shopping centre carpark, which would have caused chaos a chokepoint.

In short, as long as one doesn't park like an idiot which could impede others, then whatever.

  • Someone parked in a way that makes them a dick or it's dangerous, absolutely. I reported someone recently because they park right at the edge of an intersection on a main road (clear broken white line there) every single day. There is no reason for them to do it, there's plenty of space to park, and it makes getting off the main road a pain in the arse to get around them every day.

That said, I used to live on a street with permit parking and I couldn't give a flying who parked there - most people had driveways anyway. But there was one person on the street who always checked and reported people because they had nothing better to do. That seemed pretty pointless.

Don't know how you could get that sign wrong. Fine deserved.

  • When people blatantly park under a no stopping sign around where I live, and force vehicles to go around them, I'm fuming.
    Same with no parking.

Luckily for them, council rangers only operate from 0700hrs to 0545hrs. So they all start this bs after 6pm.

Blocking the pedestrian path, parking on the nature strip and parking in disabled bays are something I see quite often while I'm on foot.

  • You actually parked your car in a no parking zone (where only police and council vehicles are allowed to park). Don’t know how you missed the P in a circle with a cross through it.

  • Parallel parking signage placement is just insane (is it only in Oz?), you basically have to walk on the road to read it, after you parked.

  • I have reported a few cars after they've been sitting in a spot for a month or 2, with dust all over them, closer inspection revealed a busted door lock and was obviously stolen and dumped and was taking up a valuable parking space (was St Kilda Vic).
If it was my car that was stolen I'd want it back or want to know about its wherabouts.
Other than that why report someone doing the wrong thing parking-wise?

  • +1

I reported the guy with the 10m long truck who kept parking up against our driveway (not allowed to park vehicle >7.5m in a residential area). Narrow road, couldn't see anything when trying to get in and out of our driveway. Took two $750 fines before he got the hint. Council guy said if he came back, they'd come ticket him within an hour.

    • that's well deserved!
