Tyre Change help

I’m not mechanical minded lol but have changed a few tyres over years but not many, wife came home with car and I noticed tyre was really almost flat lol.
How she never knew when driving no idea maybe it was slowly going down.

I noticed a huge screw in the bottom side when I take off the tyre as tyres are required to be replaced im getting two new tyres fitted first thing tomorrow.
To get myself to get the tyres replaced I decided to put spare on I have never used spare and come with car when new I got it at 3 months old from a previous owner.
My current alloys with tyres are 235/55/r18
My spare is 215/70/r16 is this ok to put on car as sizes are bit different?
The garage im getting my new tyres fitted tomorrow is about 10km away.

As said not clued up on tyres etc but that’s what car came with.
I’m not going to use spare to drive around in just to get me to garage.

I noticed a huge screw in the bottom side

Which bottom side? If it's the middle tread area, it can be repaired without needing to be replaced if nothing else wrong with it and has sufficient tread depth.

    See chart: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/255280/104789/puncture…

Otherwise, yes, the smaller spare is fine to put on. There will be a limit to speed and number of km you can do on it that's worth keeping in mind.

    • No the thread is getting close to indicators and I just been putting them off but see no point in getting tyre fixed when both are due to need replaced anyway.
I have going to get tyres replaced within next 4 weeks but just as well get replaced now.
Just unlucky with the screw in it which is on the flat middle of tyre not sides etc.

I’m sure it could be repaired and put back on but the tyres are due to be replaced anyway.
Was just worried if the spare im putting on is ok compared to what my other tyres are.
It’s only to get me to place to have both tyres replaced.

      Which bottom side?

wife's bottom side had huge screw.

They are give or take within 2% of diameter, it'll be fine.

    • it’s ok then, I don’t know why spare is so different to my tyres on car maybe previous owner put different alloys on it back then which im sure he said he did.

Because buying an extra alloy just for the spare aint worth it. Even new cars often dont include an alloy rim for the spare

        • No, depending on model manufacturer can put another alloy as the spare. Small car like Corolla or Mazda 3/2 usually has spacesaver tire on them as spare and these tires are totally different to the other 4.

put the 2 tyre sizes on a tyre calculator, difference is 1.1% its fine for 10km drive

    • Ok good I just was not sure I go there first thing tomorrow I been holding off on replacing the two tyres knowing they are due to replace soon getting border line with indicators.
So rather than mess around with a puncture just as well replace them as due to anyway.

I’m not going to use spare to drive around in just to get me to garage.

If thats what you meant to say, then the only solution would be to have it towed, or drive on the rims.

If you do want to drive to the tyre place with the 16in spare, that should be ok, as Vince and Bhubb have said, as long as you arent driving on a freeway over 80kph (10kms shouldn't be an issue)

    • Yea, I was confused at this point too.

@op, it's a space Saver spare. It's what the manufacturer recommends. It's 100%safe up to the speed written on the side of the tyre (usually 80kmph).

Just drive it there and don't forget to pay the $50-75 for a alignment and balancing.

Also, I saw a buy 3 get one free on Yokohama so make use of that deal.

But four, put the two new ones in the front, put the other 2.into safe, proper storage and then just have them fit it on when your rears wear out.

Where are you getting your new tyres from? And what tyres?

      • Take your worthless neg and… Xxx

use online calculator and help yourself
    https://tire-calc.com/comparison/235-55-r18-and-215-70-r16/

  • It will be fine, but you may find yourself driving in circles if you are not careful.

  • +1

It depends on the car. If your car has some fancy auto 4wd system it could cause an issue or throw a code for ABS.

  • +2

Sounds like you have a space saver which probably only has a recommended 80km/h limit.

Yes, it'll be fine to run around for a little bit. But don't go Freeway Driving at 110km/h on it…..

wife drove home on flat tyre and did not know?
remove wife and with money saved by a new car with 4 new tyres

Put spare tyre on, drive to tyre shop get them replaced. Most likely they’ll put the 2 news one on the front and old front tyres on the back, especially if car is front wheel drive. Don’t cheap out on the wheel alignment if it needs one either. And whilst you’re there, get them to check the spare and have it pumped to 36 psi before it goes back in the boot.

  • Its fine. most cars come with space savers these days anyway.

  • you'll be fine to drive with spare

  • Hey OP - when you get to the garage ask them if its a space saver, and if not then see if you can use one of the tyres they are changing as your spare for future.

  • it was slowly going down, you can just pump the tyres up and then drive to the tyre shop.
