Speechify Premium - VPN (up to 91% discount) ... with a catch

Hi guys

So the reason this is in the forums and not posted as a deal is, I haven't got it working yet and would welcome any assistance.

If you go to the Speechify Premium purchase page it will adjust prices based on the local country you are in.

Candidates so far:
* India: $18.27 (91% discount) - not available via NordVPN
* Brazil: $18.52 (91% discount)
* Mexico: $26.24 (87% discount)

Don't bother with these:
* Turkey: $148.82
* Argentina $208.62
* Greece: $227.58

Note:
Foreign countries won't accept our credit cards, as Speechify defaults to Australia. Google Pay wasn't successful either, but Apple Pay might work for iOS users. PayPal is an option, though it's not supported everywhere; it works in Mexico but not in Brazil. Because of Speechify's subscription model, it's unclear how billing will work. The service initially charges $0 for a 3-day trial, but it's uncertain whether we would be charged $26.24 or the Australian default of $209. And if I cancel the charge authorisation, I'm unsure if I'll see the intended charge amount.

This could be a real deal if we get it working.

    What is happening is that speechify is setting up a Paypal subscription.

    You can cancel authorisations for paypal subscriptions under settings on the website. Instructions here:

    Here is the indian pricing, (don't see paypal as an option here)

    After 3 days:
    ₹999 INR / year = $18.27 AUD
    ₹83.25 x 12 months

    • Thanks for the extra information. Do you know if PayPal will also show me what the attempted Speechify subscription cost will be in advance of receiving it?

      That's interesting that we have a new price winner from India, I will update the post accordingly.

      • No worries, glad to help. My name doesn't need to be shown in the first post.

        By the way, have you checked in-app purchases/pricing?

        ie: A purchase going through the App Store for IOS or Android,
        Maybe you'll be able to checkout using that method, if you weren't able to do it through Paypal.

        I believe the pricing can also change by region there too.

        • Good question, I am aware of Apple Türkiye as I use that for my Microsoft 365 subscription giving insane discounts but haven't installed the app on my phone to test that. I will check later - I'm just getting stuck into a novel I'm writing so I'll keep my focus on that for the rest of the day I think :)

          Will update when I have tested this however.

          • @Click_It: Hey there, did you manage to see if it works?

            I also tried on my side:

            • Using VPN to India + registering = only credit card option. Upon entering an AU credit card, it will force you to pay using AUD with AUD prices. I also tried to "manipulate" it by manually forcing my AU credit card on the backend, but it will give a CURRENCY_MISMATCH error.
            • Using VPN to Mexico + registering = can choose PayPal which I can then pay using my AU PayPal, but after all that, a subscription is created and it says it will draw $139.00 USD yearly, so I canceled the subscription
            • Using Turkey iOS = can pay with Apple Credit, but the cost after conversion is about the same as paying AUD (around $205 AUD)
            • Using India iOS = surprisingly, this is the same expensive yearly cost ($205 AUD)
            • @b-t: Hey thanks for chipping in. No unfortunately I hit the same walls as you, the PayPal was my last big hope and it failed too, as you described. Yeah the Turkey iOS route will work but there's no real saving to be had, it seems to the folks at Speechify thought of everything. I couldn't try the India options but it looks like you've covered all bases there too.

              As a consolation prize I discovered a partial solution in front of me the whole time. I recently upgraded to Microsoft 365 using the Turkey ios loophole and realised It comes with an upgraded read aloud text to speech feature, it's not at Speechify level but it's pretty good and for my main current purpose, writing a novel, it's actually very useful and free. It still was great having the nice Speechify voices for the web though so I'll keep my eyes out for another solution, Speechify aren't the only kids on the block.

              • @Click_It: Haha fair enough, thanks for your update!

                I recently tried to start going through a bunch of text books so I was interested in uploading the PDFs into Speechify to get them read to me at 2x speed so that I even when I'm driving I can get through some content.

                It's worth it at $23.. not so much at $205… :)

                • @b-t: No worries, unfortunately it looks like we're out of luck on this one. At least we tried!

                  100% agree though. For $23 it's a no-brainer but I can't justify it at $205 either.
