  • Great deal. I bought z790 Carbon for Intel CPU and it's awesome. Future proof with PCIe 5.0 M2, WiFi 6E and USB 20G.

    • +1

As long as you don't plan on updating the CPU.

      • 14th gen will be on the same socket so…

        • +1

          Isn't it LGA 1851 for 14th Gen ?

        • If the 14th generation is the new Meteor Lake architecture then it probably won't - reportedly that will be LGA-1851, but if they just do a Raptor Lake refresh they'll probably stick with the existing LGA-1700 socket for that.

          • @dudleydoright: 14th gen is Raptor Lake refresh, Meteor Lake was cancelled for desktop (so only for laptop)

            • @povogamer: Or so the rumor goes - it's worth mentioning that none of this is confirmed other than there will be a Raptor Lake refresh so if your time horizon for "future proof" is this year, then there's something at least.

  • I have the edge (this was more expensive) and have been very happy with it (paired with a 7800x3d)

    This is a great deal.

  • It probably doesn't apply to most people but just thought I'd FYI in case, that this board doesn't have pci-e 5

    • +6

Not entirely true, it has PCIe 5 M.2, which is the most you can expect out of the B650 chipset, if you want PCIe 5 for the x16 slot you need to go with the B650E or X670E chipset, but given top-end current GPUs are now only pushing the bandwidth limits of PCIe 3 you’re not really missing out on much.

      • +1

There is a bit more to it than that though.

        • With AM5 being considered as a platform that will last at least 4-5 years, it gets a bit complicated to decide whether to be more pragmatic now or plan for the future.
        • It's still a bit hard to get over the fact to get AM5 but still stay mostly PCIe gen 4.
        • PCIe bifurcation, which this board may support, makes it more complicated.
        • PCIe gen 5 x16 (not available to this board), when bifurcated to x8 x8 or x4 x4 x4 x4 could be useful later on. However, first gen PCIe gen 5 x4 SSDs are more hype than actually take full advantage of PCIe gen 5 x4 and buying 3 or 5 of them now is unrealistic.

Personally though, I don't quite buy into commit heavily to a first gen AM5 motherboard as you will re-use it later on for CPU upgrade(s). I have a well rated B450 board and in many ways, it is more limited than my el cheapo B550 board.

Far from guaranteed that we’ll see GPUs pushing the limits of PCIe 4 before AM6, and given cost premium of an E chipset you could probably buy a new mobo that supports it down the track and not be spending more. Anyone who’s buying top-end GPUs again ib that timeframe may well be upgrading everything anyway.

PCIe 5 is more useful for enterprise storage, where the physical space savings for a given level of bandwidth will come into play.

          • @SolitaryMan: It is the x8 x8 (or more like x8 x4 x4) that gets interesting. In fact, that's the game AMD is playing right now on the E series. Up to 3 PCIe gen 5 x4 m.2 wired to the CPU. PCIe gen 5 x8 has the same bandwidth as PCIe gen 4 x16, so would be okay for GPU for quite some time.

It comes down to whether you want to push an AM5 CPU to its limit or not. While I get the "excuse" for not making PCIe gen 5 x16 standard on both Intel and AMD camps, for AM5, the "future proofing" feels like mostly for marketing. Also, the PCIe lanes to chipset is PCIe gen 4 only so that just doesn't feel next gen (or future proofing) to me at all.

I do feel the description of this deal should be updated to mention PCIe gen 5 x4 on m.2 slot only. Technically, whether we like it or not, PCIe gen 5 x16 does double the bandwidth of PCIe gen 4 x16. Another problem is Steve from Hardware Unboxed recently reviewed a lot of B650 boards and there happened to be one (or maybe two) that seems reasonably priced with PCIe gen 5 x16 support.

Cheers OP, first part of a new build ordered. Will be nice to finally upgrade from Z170 (6700K, getting a bit old now!)

    • +2

same here, 7700k… it's been ages

      • +1

3770k here. Chugging along. Waiting for Ryzen 8000 series early next year with new motherboard chipsets. Don't like buying 1st gen on new platforms but cannot deny, these deals are tempting.

        • Glad Im not the only one, holding on to my 3570k OC to 4.4 Ghz until Zen 5.

          • +1

@binary101: Yea because back then CPU performance increase per generation were in single digit percentages, even 5 years after the debut of the 3700k (2012), CPU performance difference between 3770k and 7700k (2015) was around 35%. It's only recently in the last 5 years with Ryzen and Intel 9th gen and up that we are now seeing noticeable performance jumps. My Ryzen 8000 series upgrade around $2500 next year will be monumental, 12 years in the making.

            • @Dollar Dreamer: Yep, it is kinda of weird to see so many people upgrade to Zen 4 with pretty decent CPUs (compared to our setups), different use cases I guess. Ryzen 8000 does look very promising with its IPC gains and hopefully prices of AM5 motherboard with better PCIE 5.0 support would have stabilised by then.

    • +2

Same here, 2500k it's been ages

        A legendary cpu

    • Z170-AR here with 6700k. Thinking of buying this

    • Do I count with a R5 3600XT? :D

    • +1

      4790k here haha. Just ordered!

    • Seriously tempted.

I’m on Skylake and a 1060, and need to get something that can run Starfield before it launches. About two months to work it all out.

Prime Day is just around the corner though….

  • I'm almost certainly going to pick this up too - been looking at the B650E PG riptide, but for almost $100 less this seems better, and the Taichi light probably won't come down that far. Not to mention that I just updated from a 1060 6GB to an RX6700 10GB, so not exactly going for high performance GPU here. Probably not going to have any issues with GPU bandwidth for the next half decade.

Only other issue is that the main PCI-E slot drops to 8x when either of the 2nd and 3rd M.2 slots are in use, so you can have ridiculous M.2 storage or full 4.0 x16, but not both. Still, loads of fast USB and loads of SATA, 5.1 out and S/PDIF as well.

    • Good pick up, that is a significant drawback. There is s 4th M.2 slot that can be used.
Shouldn’t have anything mess with the primary Pcie slot for the GPU. Bad design imo.

      • Probably 650E motherboards will be dropping towards $300 soon enough. Patience hehehe.

    • Damn didnt know that. Thats a bummer. Is the PCI-E drop normal?

      • I'm much more used to the SATA and M.2 slots clashing which is why I was checking, but apparently these are all nvme only M.2 slots (No SATA M.2 at all), so instead they're competing with the 16x slot for PCI-E lanes. You can still run 2 M.2 drives, 1 5.0 (slot 1) and 1 4.0 (slot 4) without impacting the slot - it's only if you want 3 or 4 that you'll have to compromise. Also, depending on what GPU you're using it might not matter at all. At present even a 4090 would only suffer a 2% loss from an 8x 4.0 slot: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090-p…

Incidentally this also makes me feel fairly confident that I won't give a shit about not having 5.0x16 for my GPU in 5 years. Now I might at that point conceivably regret if I bulk up to 4 M.2 drives and only have 4.0x8, but certainly not today. And I can just use SATA for bulk storage instead once I go past 2 drives. Hell, I still using spinning rust now and only have a single nvme M.2 drive anyway. What I prefer is that as a 'premium' B650 board, this thing seems to have all the nice extra trimmings (7 fan headers! 11 USB3 ports!), as well as being built to last.

  • Far out. I ordered the tomahawk for $322 from MSY on Thursday. I chose click and collect and I haven’t yet received the email to say it’s ready to pick up. Could I cancel, do you think? Does anyone have experience with that sort of thing with MSY?

    • I'd give it a shot

    • Yeah, MSY you have 30 days return, so you can order this and tell them to cancel the other order you haven't picked up.

      • Thanks. I just ordered this and emailed to ask to cancel. Seeing as it’s not even ready for pick up yet, I can’t see it being a big deal for them. There’s still the risk they might only give me store credit, but it’d be a bit of a dick move since I’m sure someone else in my area (only 1 msy store in ACT) will want a Tomahawk in the near future so they won’t need to ship it back to the warehouse or wherever

        • Nah, even before umart "bought" over MSY, they have the returns policy within 30 days. Don't worry, I did once before when I bought 3070Ti last year and still able returned unopened with full refund.

    • Yup if it's same as umart just cancel under 30 day return unopened

    • UPDATE:
I bought the new motherboard and then immediately emailed MSY support asking them to cancel the first order because I’d decided to upgrade. They replied quickly at 5:07pm on a Sunday saying they’ve cancelled the first order and I’ll get the refund soon. Very happy. And surprised that they were working that late on a Sunday.

  • does it need upgrade bios to support 7800X3D?

    • +2

Should work out of the box but you wanna do a bios upgrade anyway to mitigate recent issues with AM5 chips

      • Yes, sounds good idea. Thanks

  • Have a 850 watt PSU I bought last year from and old corsair sale. Bit the bullet and bought the mobo, hopefully some good case deals now and GPU deals.

    • I did the same haha. There are so few components you can buy when there’s a deal and then leave sitting around before you buy everything else without them depreciating or becoming obsolete while you wait for the next deal. Power supply and cooler and case really. It’s a slippery slope from here though. Now the clock is ticking while you wait for deals on the other components haha.

Check out scorptec, they had some deals the other day.

      • Ram as well haha

Would someone pick this card over this one?:

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/wkFbt6/msi-mpg-b650-edge…

Planning for a black and white build with the best AMD CPU and GPU money can buy so trying to cut costs elsewhere so wondering if I should just bite the bullet with this deal or not.

  • How would this compare to my b550 gaming edge wifi mobo? Would my ryzen 5 5600x be supported?

    • No, this is a Zen 4/AM5 board - it only takes 7000 series CPUs.

  • finally starting upgrade from my devils canyon i7 - jeez nearly coming on 10 years.

  • -1

Is it worth upgrading from my MSI B450M Mortax Max? It has had its BIOS flashed so running a 5800x3D on it with no issues and have a USB wifi dongle so not sure if I need to spend the money really

    • -1

Are you just fishing for some attention and want someone to give you the answer you already no ;)

      • know*

        • -1

the 'no' is the answer to his question -_-

      • -1

Not really, I'm sure there are other features on it that my 450m doesnt have that I'm not really aware of… and not sure if they are worth it

        • Wait, just checking you're not thinking your 5800x3D fits an AM5 socket on this B650 right? cause it doesn't… you'd need a new 7000 series CPU…

          • @Doomedgrind: Oh thanks for letting me know, i actually thought they would be "backwards compatible" lol. Cheers

  • Price gone back up :(

  • What's a good CPU and RAM deal to pair this up with? And RGB cooler?

I'm upgrading from an old Skylake system so I'm out of the loop

  • Finally ready for pickup! Only now need to wait for a CPU deal

    • Mine only became ready for pick up today!
