JVC KW-R930BT Head Unit $125 ($112.50 with New Sign up) Delivered @ Automotive Superstore

60

I needed a dual DIN headunit & didn't want a touch screen as the car I bought came with a Sony XAV-65 & it was faulty - I don't trust the reliability of touch-screen head units due to their additional complexity (Could have been previous owner damaging it tho).

So I was looking 2nd hand on FB marketplace with asking prices around $100, but then I spotted this deal & grabbed one instead.

I got offered 10% off coupon for making & account & subscribing to their newsletter. So I got it for $112.50, but for $125 it's still pretty good.

Good deal - but good luck receiving it - the two orders I have done with them has never shown up / never sent.
Don’t respond to emails or answer phone calls - took months to get a refund.

    • Ah damn - that's a shame.

I set mine up for pick up as I noticed they weren't far away from me & I wanted it immediately. There was a 10 minute ready claim, but that wasn't met.

It took 3 days for them to process the order & have it available, I spoke to an online support person via chat & they said they needed time to get through the backlog of orders from the sale as normally the volume wasn't this high. Fair-enough I thought: I can't expect them to have Amazon-like logistics capability, but that would explain the risk of missing orders.

      Physical shop seemed good tho.
Lot of nice people treating their prospective customers well when I rocked up: But yeah it's more like a showroom attached to a warehouse with a small selection of what they have compared to their online shop. I don't know if you can walk in & ask to buy one.

    • To be fair, call them up and they're pretty decent to deal with.

Then again the last time I've called them up was a while ago so I dunno what they've been like after moving the warehouse.

    • I ordered a kenwood wireless android auto/carplay unit from them on sunday. Arrived yesterday.

I've just ordered something from them, and took a week to send it out…andddd it's still missing a couple of items.

I wanna support them but this makes it hard.

    • Wow. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Buyers beware. (I got mine in the end, but seems like it's the luck-of-the-draw)

  • This looks very similar to the Kenwood DPX-5300BT (JVC and Kenwood are the same company so I wouldn't be surprised if they are the same internally) which seems to be pretty much a DPX-M3200BT with the addition of a CD player.

Both the 5300 and 3200 were on clearance at my local Autobarn, the website lists them as $229 and $169 respectively, but in store they were 40% off so I got a 3200 for $101.40 and I'm pretty happy with it so far. The mobile app is complete rubbish but the stereo itself is decent, bluetooth calls and streaming work well, Mitsubishi steering wheel controls were detected and setup without requiring an expensive adaptor (requires cutting into the wires or building a custom harness).

Stock was pretty limited (I got the last 3200 from my store) but if you don't need a cd player you might find one and save another $11.

    • Nice! Yes probably a shared platform between JVC & Kenwood - I noticed this when looking up amplifiers.
I would've preferred to NOT have the CD player myself, but wasn't as good at deal hunting.

In my recent search I discovered that my local autobarn has closed down :(. So sad to lose a DIY Car shop in the area.

  • Got one, couldn’t get the 10% code but got 5% off

  • will these go into any car? i have an older euro - would steering controls work for example, with this? would i be able to adjust the separate clock that is built into dash that uses the factory head unit to adjust?

    • No, it won't work on every car I'm afraid - you'll have to do your own research.

This model is unlikely able to alter your factory clock as the wiring harness doesn't indicate any such capability:

      • 12V Battery (volatile memory power)
      • Acc
      • GND
      • Steering Wheel Remote (must be some standard?)
      • Rem out (for amp powering on & power antennas)
      • Illumination (on/off)
      • the usual 8 wires for 4 speakers.

Double DIN is a standard that is exposed in budget cars & older cars (like mine). A lot of cars have customised front dash panel that stops you from slotting one in to increase sex appeal (aka interior styling). The mounts behind might follow a DIN standard for some cars, and some aftermarket companies make entire dash fascias to get rid of the sex appeal to allow for aftermarket headunits.
