Starlink Speed in Melbourne West

Hi guys,

I live in Melbourne West and my house comes under crappy Telstra Velocity and max speeds I can get (if lucky) is 16 Mbps.

I am looking to get Starlink home version and want to know the experiences of people using it.

  • What kind of speeds you get in Melbourne?
  • Does bad weather impact the service?
  • Is it really a DIY install for a non-handy person?

Any tips etc. I should be aware of.

Thank you!

  • Can't provide comment on Starlink but have you looked into alternatives such as fixed wireless or wireless internet?

    • Home 5G and fixed wireless both not available.

        Have you looked into moving?

  • What kind of speeds you get in Melbourne?

Melbourne to my understanding has limited coverage because ACMA put restrictions on inner city areas. So it is only covered by satellites on the outer fringe. But in areas I have done installs it is 100/10 maybe 100/20 - Upload is the worst part at times.

Does bad weather impact the service?

Yes, it can. But it would have to be pretty bad like an thunderstorm to wipe it out completely. In wet weather it could have bad performance.

Is it really a DIY install for a non-handy person?

It can be if you have basic IT knowledge.

  • Why are you considering Starlink in Melbourne? NBN fixed line should be available and will be a lot cheaper.

16Mbps for velocity should be a fault report. Also, velocity is no more. It got sold and you can go through a lot of different resellers for opticomm now

  • Which suburb do not have nbn?

what plan are you on? I'm on Telstra velocity on premium speed getting 96Mbps from 100Mbps plan

    Moving to Opticomm soon

I have Starlink and FTTN NBN but I'm in NSW.

The speed you get on Starlink doesn't depend on which suburb you're in like the NBN. If you get a clear view of the southern sky where you mount the dish you're good to go. If there are trees, pole or buildings in the way you're going to have a bad time. The Starlink app has a function where you can stand where you want to mount the dish and scan the sky and it'll tell you if it's obstructed. The stand it comes with is for sitting on the ground only. I get anything from 1000/30 to 70/7. Most of the time during the day it's around 220/20.

Very heavy rain and hail will kill the connection because the dish can't communicate with the satellites. It comes back online once the storm passes. Depending on how dense the cloud is may slow the connection. Melbourne weather is trash (lived there for 13 years) but Starlink do allow you to return it if you don't like it within 30 days and winter would be the time to try it. Those dark days and weeks you get with the low, dense, dark clouds wouldn't be conducive to blazing speeds.

I bought a gutter mount bracket and installed mine and ran the cables through the walls. If you're not handy you may need to pay someone to install it for you.

If you're in an outer suburb of Melbourne I'd be exhausting all my options in terms of troubleshooting your fibre before you spend 50% more a month on Starlink.

    • Just for clarity the NBN speed isn't so much determined by the Suburb but more the technology used, for FTTN its how far your connection is away from the node.
So similar to the old ADSL days the further you are from the node the slower your connection will be.
In terms of Telstra velocity estates they are being converted to Opticomm fibre so you should be getting far better speeds then 16Mbps.

      • every house in my neighborhood on the Telstra velocity network is FTTP , the speeds the OP is getting sounds like the 4g backup speed(the sim card in the telstra modem) to be honest

Also there is still unknowns like what plan the OP is on? 25Mbp plan with typical evening speeds of 16Mbps?

  • Yeah actually that could well be happening as well, would pay for the OP to follow up with Telstra at any rate.
As they will be able to rectify any faults.
Or they could just put up with the slower speed till Opticomm takes over and then they will be able to leave Telstra for another provider.
