Help Me to Find a Good Office Chair for around $700

What office / gaming chair would you recommend for a budget of ~$700 ? Currently considering Secret Labs Titan Evo.

Long version:

I work in IT and work from home fulltime (at least for now). ~8 hours a day staring at a monitor or on zoom calls / slack.
Was using a cheap Aldi chair and decided to upgrade since I have back pains as well.

I bought an Ergotune Supreme V3 on a EOFY deal ~$600 after reading many reviews. But turned out sitting on it for > 1hr creates pretty bad back pains due to the way the lumbar support it set. I am planning on returning that and getting something else.

Budget ~$700 but I am looking for a chair with a very good back support.

Currently considering a Secret Labs Titan Evo.

I found that most office chairs I have used, gives me some forms of back pains if I use them for close to 2 hrs. But I can sit on most car seats for ~3 hrs without issues and recently took a 17hr flight in economy without major issues.

Might sound like a flawed logic but that is why I was looking at gaming chairs as they seem pretty close to car / plane seats and somehow the fancy looking office chairs seem to not like me.

search ozb there are few recently.
no search manually but use that top right corner search bar feature

  • Have a look at Boulies

  • I picked up a Haworth Zody (RRP $900 ish) at Officeworks about 6 months ago and have been very happy with its lumbar support. The key was I was able to sit in it in-store for like 30 minutes while I made up my mind, haha, and also it was someone else's return (apparently owned for less than a day), so I got a pretty sizeable discount on it.

    • thanks but I saw lot of reviews saying that Haworths you get at officeworks are not good for some reason - and it looks like they are on online only thing now

      • You could be right. I do know the Zody can have '4D' arms, which mine doesn't, so I may opt to buy those at some point as I like adjustability. I also recall reading something about some of the Officeworks-sold Haworth models actually lacking the lumbar support element, which I agree would be ludicrous to consider. Mine has it though, and I think it was non-Zody Haworths that were affected by this. If Officeworks doesn't sell them at all anymore though my point is moot.

My purchase was after weeks of frustrated searching (all while working day-to-day with a terrible back ache) and I also considered Ergotune, Ergohuman, Ikea chairs, random Amazon chairs, and plenty of others, so I did kinda bite the bullet and got a bit lucky that Zody works for me. I used to prefer 'executive' chairs but found my body doesn't like them anymore. I've not had the budget to consider the more premium brands.

Also, IMO "gaming" chairs are abominable. Don't know how anyone manages to sit in one for more than 5 minutes. Super stiff and with zero support other than a separate pillow. I think their prevalence has a lot to do with marketing & giving them to influencers/streamers to use.

Go into a store and sit in the chairs yourself until you find one you like.
Spending a lot of money on a chair doesn't mean it will be good for you

You won't know if it's suitable until you sit in it. Most office chairs kill me - cheap or expensive.

Steelcase Series 1. Might not look like much but it's really comfortable. Maybe go check out a showroom if you can. They have an EOFY sale (I think 20% - 35% based on model) but it ends tomorrow, unless you can get yourself into a showroom tomorrow?

  • thanks all for the replies,

I did pull the trigger on a steelcase series 2 on the eofy promotion for $780 with the headrest. Unfortunately I did not have time to pay a visit to the showroom.

From my experience I found that the relatively flat backed chairs works well for me (the $30 plastic bunnings chair is more comfortable for me than the ergotune) So fingers crossed

    • How did you go with the steelcase series 2 chair?

I quite like it, much better than the ergotune for me.

It doesn't really have a pronounced lumbar unlike ergotune which suites my back well. However I don't feel any cushioning on the back. Feels a bit like a plastic party chair (back rest). May be it is a good thing - but I'd really expect a bit more comfort from a chair at this price point.

However, at full price it is nearly 1200 (with headrest) (I paid close to 800) - and is 100% plastic. Even at 800 I think it is not worth that much but you pay for the name and the build quality. Ergotune at 600 is equally well built, metal base, has a lot more adjustments - but has completely wrong ergonomics. I guess steelcase spent the money on research.

If you have time to shop around and physically test a lot of chairs, you should be able to find a good generic chair that is same as series 2 for about 500. But I like this and keeping this and may be one day have enough money for something like a haworth fern, gestrue or embody.
