As you mentioned, Travel Insurance Direct also have their Snow related and sports related travel insurance websites and policies. Most skiers/snowboarders heading to USA, Japan and Europe get their insurance through TID whose rates are cheaper then Allianz equivelant.
I just did some comparisons for a single traveller. For my trip to Asian in March.
TID - $62 with discount
Allianz - $80 !!
So yeah, just because its underwritten by Allianz doesn't mean Allianz is cheaper (all the time).
I needed travel insurance earlier in the year and TID was the cheapest. Although I didn't make a claim but I still recommend it on the price alone.

Its just my opinion, and I have never needed the travel insurance I have taken out.
But if its underwritten by allianz, why not go straight to allianz itself?
