I would like to see RM Williams come out with a vegan range.

    • +1

Why? RM Williams are built on quality

      • +1

RM Williams new line, vegan cowboys.

        • -3

          brokeback mountain?

    • -3

      Do you eat your shoes?

      • +1

If that's your thing man I am not gonna judge. I just wanna see a rugged cowboy sporting a vegan pair of RM Williams. Think of the outrage from the conservatives.

        • +4

I would if they made them, it's the future and less death.
My leather RMs are very uncomfortable and were a prick to break in for about 6 months. Docs do vegan leather and pretty good, ready to go.

Is this the same said rugged (profanity) banker at the pub with all his colleagues in matching boots? I doubt 98% of people that own them have never worn them on a farm let a alone a horse.

          • -3

@G-rig: You realise they don't grow cows for leather? They die either way for food. Not using the leather is just wasteful and replacing it with plastic is terrible for the environment.

            • +1

              @Stivo: Oh really?
Was referring to livestock for meat, and livestock for leather may or may not be exclusive.

Two wrongs don't make a right anyway with that logic.

            • +1

@Stivo: The ability to sell leather subsidises the cost of beef for people who eat it, and beef is easily the least environmentally friendly of the commonly eaten meats.

          • -1

@G-rig: I don't get the RM farming thing. The soles on those boots are terrible for anything except for pavement. Lugged Vibram soles are much more versatile. Even DM soles are better.

Veganism is primarily an ethical stance against animal exploitation. A plant-based diet is merely a byproduct of that stance, extending to all other consumption as far as is practicable and possible.

        • -6

More animals die in crop production than meat production. Vegans are insulated from seeing this death so it doesn't factor in their decision.

          • +7

@Ghos7: We all know this isn't true, the same old harvester legacy argument. It's all been debunked 1000 times. Do you realise how much land is cleared for livestock and how many crops and water is used to feed said livestock? A few people eating chickpeas is in the single percent.

  • -3

Vegan range. Another word for plastic

    • +9

      Not necessarily.

"Lining: 100% Cotton, Outsole: 100% Rubber, Upper: 100% Cotton"

    • +1

      Yeah nah. No idea.

  • Only the vegan version is the ethical one!

    • -1

What if the vegan shoes squish a bug? Still vegan?

  • +4

They look like they're $9.99 shoes

  • +2

making people believe that they can feel nicer if they choose to be vegan, and then call shoes vegan as a marketing strategy and exploit 'vegans'. extremely comical.

    • +1

it just means they don't use leather lol

      • There can also be glues made from animals.

    • +3

You're not wrong, there probably is a vegan tax. But at the same time, as a lazy vegan, I like the convenience of products being clearly labelled vegan so I don't need to research whether a product is derived from animal abuse - happy to pay the lazy vegan tax.

      • -8

More animals die from crop production that meat production. Eating meat is the more ethical choice if you want to minimise animal suffering.

        • +4

          This is a ridiculous comment.

How do you think animals raised for meat are fed?

          • +2

@Jabewabe: I mean… it could be technically true if you consider insects are animals, and 'more' refers to the number of individual animals dying.

Pesticides do kill a lot of animals in that case. Bit of a silly argument though.
But then, those animals also feed on the underlying crop too, so doubly silly.

            • @NigelTufnel: I think he is including insects and heres the thing the feed used for animals is certain types only, compared to all the crops grown for human use and all the insects / nature that are affected by growing those crops.

          • @Jabewabe: In Australia its almost all fed on grass. We do pasture farming here. Except for market segment who things grain finishes is worth more money (it isnt).

            • +4

@Stivo: That maybe true of cows and sheep, but pigs, chicken and fish (possibly amongst others) are raised in intensive and highly confined spaces with feed made from grain, legumes or other animals. Also it maybe a small local segment who think grain finishes are worth the money, but 67% of beef is exported from Australia, and approximately 50% of cattle in 2022 were finished in feed-lots https://www.mla.com.au/news-and-events/industry-news/cattle-…, and about 10% of sheep are grain-finished https://www.aussiebeefandlamb.com.au/globalassets/true-aussi…. Also cows and sheep maybe mostly pasture-raised but they are still fed (for some portion of their total feed) hay and silage grown and harvested elsewhere.

Its just marketing. Some people would look down on plastic shoes. Might even say its bad for the environment. But you call it vegan and suddenly you can charge a premium. To hell with the environment.

      • +2

Some people would look down on plastic shoes

You know they're cotton canvas right?

  • How does one pronounce "Superga" ?
