Best ultra budget TV under 60-65"?

My mum's 12 year old 55" LG TV finally almost dead. Seems like CPU needs a reball- common issue it seems

Looked at a replacement mainboard - $150 used from China with no guarantees

So looking for an ultra budget, yet usable solution. Looked at the used market but can see that TVs gone down in price in the recent years…

Something under 60-65", as hers 55" was probably a max size for the room
$399 for 58" EKO from BigW sounds good, but probably not so good in real life

Don't really care about the "Smart" part as she is currently using Chrome cast TV, but nowadays probably all TVs are "smart", or at least try to be

Would really appreciate your help here. She is currently watching her shows off a 32" TV they had in the kitchen

Have a look at The Good Guys eBay where you can get 10% off using YIPPEE10. E.g. FFALCON 50 Inch UF2 4K UHD Smart HDR TV 50UF2 $349.20. You can click and collect instead of paying $35 delivery.

    • Is it an ok brand though?

it should be better than or at least equivalent to Eko since it has links to TCL. Some say they are made by TCL. If you want more assurance, get a TCL with a 3 year warranty but that would be much more at $535.50. Brands like Ffalcon represent the ultra budget segment and experiences of others on here tend to point to the panels being fine after some settings are tuned, and if the UI is a problem (slightly lag in menus sometimes), something like a Fire Stick or Chromecast with Google TV should fix that.

I got a 50" for the MIL was pretty impressed with the panel for what it costed

Just had to play around with the colours

  • still use the Chromecast on the ultra budget smart tv.. given the smart OS will probably be clunky to say the least

  • A friend got a 43" Hisense A7HAU last year, the picture looks surprisingly good to me for the price. It has HDR and Dolby Vision which really does make a difference for streaming content that supports it (which is a lot now). The Smart TV features are pretty crap but as you said, doesn't matter with a Chromecast. It has a 3 year warranty. He's been very happy with it.

Buy used. Check Marketplace and Gumtree. Honestly, with a little research I think you would get the best deal this way. Ask for model numbers and Google to find specs, reviews and age. And it's often possible to bargain someone down of course.

But sometimes you may have to be willing to wait for a bargain to be listed and then jump on it before anyone else.

I recently bought a Panasonic 55 inch 4K smart TV for $250, about 4 years old. But I did miss some better deals because I was too slow.

    • Have not seen things this cheap, but I was not looking before
Dad bought their 55" LG probably in 2012 for around $3k, so it was shedding about $300 of cost each year.
But you know how folks are - too expensive to buy new now, but buying second hand will have no warranty etc etc =)

      • Availability on the used market would also depend on whether you're in a populated/urban area.

        • $250, about 4 years old

          is that actually a deal?

there's brand new ones selling below $500 to 1k with new warranty

I have a Hisense ATM- it's pretty decent if you aren't too picky. Mines getting a bit old now and the reds have always been a bit strong (you get a few lobster people in many cases) but if you aren't the kind of person who obsesses over perfect image she does the job. The newer ones are probably better. I have a Firestick on mine and ignore the smart TV stuff.

Even the very cheapest TVs have pretty great image quality. It's more lasting a lot of years without breaking that you need to worry about.

    • Some reviews for cheaper models dont look promising

The Aldi ones are a good buy when they come up, also because they have the 60 day no questions asked return if it did end up being a dud. No matter what you get, definitely use the inbuilt smart OS as little as possible and use your Chromecast or get an Apple TV.

    • Agreed - even if the OS is Android TV it'll probably perform terribly with the hardware they use in really cheap TVs.

OP if you are interested in the Ffalcon from above, it is now even cheaper at $329.80 using the Good Guys code.
